my webhost runs spamassassin but recently stuff has started slipping byi was thinking about installing a local spam filter - any opinions?i did some background research and found basically 2 types - one which is an external program that shows headers and allows me to select what to do with each one based on rules. then i have to set outlook to check mail after i do this filtering through the external app.the other kind, the better kind is what i'm looking for - community-based automatic filteringbackgroundhttp://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1874,4795,00.asphttp://spam-filter-review.toptenreviews.com/i was thinking about getting cloudmark desktop/spamnet: http://www.cloudmark.com/desktop/[Edited on May 30, 2006 at 7:44 AM. yeah i do but that isn't really all that greattons of things get by itand you only have the option of adding the sender to a blocked sender list which is stupid because they change their e-mail addresses every time. outlook isn't smart enough to figure out what's spam and what's not.so, anyone using anything that works?

the very best, of any i've tried on the client side is Cloudmark http://www.cloudmark.com/Doesn't rely on heuretics that tend to block valid messages, works as a community with people flagging spam. Upside is it detects and deletes over 99% of my spam...and in the years I've been using it, I haven't had a single valid message been flagged as spam. Downside is it costs $40 for first year and $20 for each additional year (maybe cheaper for > 10 licenses). But to me, the price is well worth it since its clearly a superior product.Download the trial, you'll be convinced. No training or any BS like that, it just starts working.

sonofabitch. i didn't realize there was a yearly subscription fee.that's too expensive for this small quantity - are there any free(er) options? at least something that can be 'bought' once or freeware entirely?mailwasher is the closest thing but i really hate the external apps to apply rules. if there's nothing else i might just get that.

^^ each license can be used on two computers...or at least thats how single subscriptions work.how many computers is this going on? I would call them and tell them your situation, you really want this product. theres no training, no overhead. its total turn key

probably the 2-3 that i use to check email regularly - work, desktop, and laptop. i could probably do without on one pc if they had a 2 pc limit.it's for personal use so there's really no way to justify that cost instead of just clicking delete

yeah for one copy, you can use it on two systems. i don't think $40 for 1st year and 20 each additional is very much $$$ for the service it delivers...but thats just me

I used to use SpamPal back in the day, and it was a community-based one that was 100% free
5/30/2006 11:10:56 PM
so i guess the real question is are there free community-based solutions out there?
5/30/2006 11:20:29 PM
