I've heard rumors about this for some time, but it looks like Sony is going to go through with it.

http://www.gamesradar.com/gb/ps3/game/news/article.jsp?articleId=20060524153157765035§ionId=1006

Quote :
"High street games shops have been told by Sony that there will be no PS3 pre-owned sections in their stores as it will be illegal for customers to sell any next-gen PlayStation games that they've bought, retail sources have revealed to GamesRadar.

It seems that Sony is planning to adopt a licensing system that will mean gamers won't own the PS3 titles that they've paid money for. Instead, they will only be purchasing the licence to play the game and that the software itself will still be Sony property - meaning that the disc won't be the customer's to sell.
"

It's like Sony is just trying to piss off the people that buy their systems. I went from being 99.9% sure I would get a PS3 to sitting squarely on the fence at this point. Quite honestly this may be the straw that breaks many camels' backs.

Even though it doesn't explicitly have anything to do with this thread I felt like embedding this anti-PS3 propaganda in here.

PC software has been this way for years. It's really no different, though it pisses me off none-the-less. I guess Sony is banking on their software being copied and sold.

^^wtf are you thinking? PC games haven't been like this for years. Sure, its illegal to sell a game and keep a copy of the disc, however its certainly NOT illegal to sell a game and destroy any backups.

gg Sony

People are all stupid. What reason is there to get all bent out of shape about a console that doesn't exist yet? Just wait a while after it comes out. If it really sucks, you'll hear about it, and you won't buy it. If it's really awesome, you'll hear about it, and you'll buy the system for a lot cheaper than the release price.

Fuckin' tards.

Is this for real? That is about the most rediculous thing I've ever heard and some of you are acting like it's no big deal.

I wonder what happens when you try to sell PS3 games on eBay/Craigslist? Sony police come get you? I don't see how they can tell you that you don't own the disc and actually make good on what they're suggesting.

Furthermore, even if it were true, most of the google eyed, gotta-have-the-latest-worthless-junk crowd would still buy a ps3.

if by "a lot cheaper" you mean maybe $100 less, and by "a while" you mean 3 to 4 years.

I do remember there have been some similar statements in the past. Wasn't there some suit where some industry claimed it was illegal for people to make backup copies of their purchases using this very logic? I wanna say the movie industry claims we don't own our movies, just the right to play them... but I'm not sure that was it.

Does anybody remember that stupid DVD technology from a few years back that required users to connect to a phone line whenever they wanted to watch their movie? The purchase price of the disc supposedly only included the right to a few viewings.

IIRC, you own a license to view the movie on that medium, but do not own the movie itself. When you sell a DVD, you are essentially selling the license you have to view said movie.

There hasn't been an official response from Sony about this yet. Everything is based off that one website's story ... which doesn't even tell it's source. I'm going to wait until something official is announced before becoming a PS3 lover/hater.

assuming this story turns out to be true, i won't be buying a PS3... I've been looking forward to that console more than any other, and was even willing to drop $600 on it, but this licensing bullshit is personal. Don't fucking patronize me, Sony.

This is what everyone should really be worried about. I'd be worried that news like this this wouldn't dissuade enough people from buying a PS3. If they still experience success you can pretty much bank on this being the norm of the future.

If it did I would completely bail on video games. The only games I buy are the $12 2+ year old used games.

Quote :
"UPDATE: The Guardian's Gamesblog turned up a response from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe that should temporarily lay these concerns to rest: "I would like to clarify that this is false speculation and that PlayStation 3 software will not be copy protected to a single machine but will be playable on any PlayStation 3 console." "

If they really wanted to put it to rest they should have worded their statement a bit better. I can't imagine them going forward with this with all the bad press it's netting them.

^^That quote doesnt negate the issue at all. It just means you can PLAY them on another machine. It says nothing about being able to SELL the games to others legally.

The story was based on speculation. Sony has made no comment on this. The same rumors surfaced like 2 years ago and it never happened with PS2 games. I don't really care if everyone hates Sony, but why get worked up over speculation?

People in japan would still buy PS3's if the games exploded after x hours of play.

And you have to think of it all from a business sense. If the customer is forced to only pay for new games, sony reaps profit from each sale, as opposed to that copy of GTA:SA that's been sold and resold 3-4 times and sony's only gotten profit once, while EB Games has profitted the rest..

It sucks from the customer's standpoint, sure. But if you put yourself in a money grubbing global company's shoes, it all comes together.

I'm too lazy to crunch the real numbers, but someone should calculate how many less games Sony could sell to maintain profits at the current level or push it higher.

I mean if sony sells a million new games a year with their current policy, and makes ~$50M

Total games sales (including used games) might be somewhere near 2 million, or $100M. (not all sony profit)

Now total sales of games will drop to, lets say, 1.25 million. 1) because some people prefer used games 2) people are turned off by the whole thing and dont buy the system.

Now the total number of games has dropped over 30%, but Sony is still making MORE money than they did.

But all these are just numbers from the top of my head, to illustrate a point. I'm aware that sony doesnt make $50 profit on each game, they're just numbers. Someone should come up with the real ones to help the prediction, and find out if what I propose will happen is possible.
