My conundrum is when buying a used car, what should you be on the lookout for beside exterior problems (paint chips, bad seating, radio sucks). Like sounds the engine makes, milage, how to look for leaks, if they're cleaned up, stuff people can hide from the buyer.

on the outside, look for rust. Look under the car for rust. if the engine makes any loud sounds or studders that's not good. Look for leaks under the hood - such as oil all over the bottom of the engine, or radiator fluid leaking out of the radiator. Push on the car and see if the shocks are alright, drive it around and see if it pulls really bad or shakes at high speeds, see if it smokes when running. Run a carfax

fresh paint sometimes means its been repaired from an accident

a really clean or painted engine bay could mean oil leak

try hitting the brakes 1 time without your hand on the wheel (make sure you are on a level road). If it pulls to the left or right then there is a problem.

before you start the car, check the color of the water in the radiator. Should be clean and green. If it looks like a milkshake, dont buy the car.

check tires for wear and tear. IF they are low on tread then add 300-400 bux

look for dripping fluids under the car.

listen for popping or crunching when you turn, thats bad

if the check engine light is on, dont belive some BS story about why. Get the code checked by someone before you buy

if the exaust smells a lot like gas, could have a sensor problem.

if your pretty sure about a car, take it to a mechanic (one you know if possible) and pay them to check it out proper. Its worth an extra $80 to make sure your not getting screwed.
