this is bullshit. 4 years of learning and we never even touched on career planning.
5/20/2006 2:35:45 PM
but you learnedand thats all that matters anyway
5/20/2006 2:36:29 PM
it never fails this time of year -- graduates whining about having to enter the real world. people arent going to hold your hand, faggot. suck it up and deal with it
5/20/2006 2:40:02 PM
true.
5/20/2006 2:48:10 PM
what was your major? If you say english or history... i truly pity you.
5/20/2006 2:48:36 PM
5/20/2006 2:49:25 PM
i don't feel so fucked. it's a vastish field, though. lot of specificity involved in the searching aspect.
5/20/2006 3:06:38 PM
5/20/2006 3:28:04 PM
there are career planning resources on campuscollege is a "do-it-yourself" atmospherewhat did you want? the career center to call you and tell you they found some jobs they think you'd really love- why dont you come in for an interview? we already have them set up for you i created my resume & did mock interviews at the career center. i also found a few internships on their website. i went to their career fairs, did networking on my own and had no problem finding a job.its a shame that most people dont start thinking about jobs until their senior year of college. by then its usually too late & they end up with jobs they dont even want so they can make rent
5/20/2006 3:36:51 PM
you're right. but i did the internships (a few). and i have an impressive portfolio, already did parttime and interviewed for fulltime at local marketing networks. i also got the job and quit the job because i didn't like it. i've been busy, so it's not like i'm late in giving a fuck.
5/20/2006 3:43:21 PM
at least you have some things going for youi knew of people graduating who still didnt have a resume put together....good luck
5/20/2006 3:45:28 PM
You're supposed to have this stuff planned out befire you get to college, KINDA. Well, sorta, I took my major because I wanted to be a philosophy major!
5/20/2006 3:48:24 PM
does that come with a bible and lifetime security clearance to the brickyard?
5/20/2006 4:23:54 PM
Hooray for cooperative eduation
5/20/2006 4:41:10 PM
^^joking. philosophy has just a good a chance as english or business or biomolecular engineering. it's all in who you know. you demonstrate common intelligence and basic self-management with a degree. granted people with high-science degrees HAVE TO know their shit to find a field in the working world.^and what is cooperative education? i hang with science people. it's all good.
5/20/2006 5:19:41 PM
you work a full year during 3 semesters. one fall one spring one summer and in between you take classes so it goes coop-school-coop-school-coop-school til u finish. MAINLY for engineer/science people but others can do it.
5/20/2006 5:28:26 PM
getting a job is easy...if you can talk to people.
5/20/2006 6:17:07 PM
you were a media major and can't talk to people?
5/20/2006 7:25:58 PM
haha, I have a double major in English and History and have good hopes of getting the job.
5/20/2006 11:27:52 PM
University is not for job training, its for learning theory. You want applicative job preparation and everyday knowledge? Go to a community college.BTW this is what I was told by the administration at NC State when I wanted to teach a mixed theory and application course. They don't give a shit about actually preparing students for the real world.
5/21/2006 1:13:04 AM
Let me put it this way: I was computer science at State and have been a software developer for the last 4 years. However, my experiences living in a fraternity house for a few years had a far greater impact on my career development than anything I learned in a classroom.
5/21/2006 1:23:56 AM
5/21/2006 1:39:16 AM
I took an ALS class that was focused upon career planning with stuff about building resumes, interviewing, resources, etc. As said earlier, you can't just wait till the last minute. Sounds like you have plenty going for you. But in the media world you'll probably have to be pretty available to any location, especially since this is a crappy area for that field.
5/21/2006 2:25:34 AM
^^shouldnt part of the KNOWLEDGE a university bestow on it's students be how to operate in the real world?I agree that a university should have a primary focus on theory, but with changing times should come a changing curriculum.
5/21/2006 3:27:03 AM
5/21/2006 3:56:45 AM
i for one have become very much more self sufficient since coming to collegemy mantra is dont count on anyone but yourself
5/21/2006 3:59:34 AM
A lot of things like personal finance aren't taught at all here. And its not something most people can just "figure out".I thank god everyday that my parents are both accountants, because I would have been fucked without their knowledge growing up.
5/21/2006 4:10:55 AM
i forget what the exact course number is but there is like a business 330 or 220 or something thats like "personal finance"...i plan on taking that some time eventually[Edited on May 21, 2006 at 4:20 AM. Reason : business 225 - personal finance]
5/21/2006 4:20:10 AM
As someone who is wholly unprepared for graduation from an employment perspective, I'll say this: all the people I know who are prepared are getting jobs I would never do in a million years. They're happy, so I'm happy for them, but I'm glad I'm not them.Proceed to calling me a naive child and making fun of my major which, in truth, has required no actual thinking through 100+ completed credit hours.
5/21/2006 4:30:14 AM
^^knowing people who have taken that class, its effectively worthless. And its hard as fuck to get into if you arent a grad student or a business major.
5/21/2006 4:33:58 AM
nah not really if you know which routes to take
5/21/2006 4:34:29 AM
5/21/2006 10:28:13 AM
5/21/2006 11:14:18 AM
Glad to see there's at least ONE practical course taught here then. But that begs the question. How many students can possibly take the course, when really probably a good 75% of the student population should. How many even know about it?
5/21/2006 11:58:27 AM
I completely agree with you there. It's not offered in enough sections where even a majority of students could take it during their time at state, and not emphasized at all. I'd be in favor of personal finance becoming a mandatory class for all students.
5/21/2006 12:03:04 PM
among a few others, I think it absolutely should be. Frankly I think its more important than that E115 bullshit

Personal Finance should not be a required class. If you can't do your finances, then you are a worthless piece of shit.
5/21/2006 1:34:49 PM
To be honest, I didn't learn anything in BUS225 that I couldn't have found out on my own. Mostly just Huggard talking about himself, his wife, his car, his house, and his job(s) a lot.
5/21/2006 1:54:10 PM
it's funny how many college students want to be treated like adults when the subject is sex and alcohol and dormlife etcand how many are not willing to act like adults and be responsible when the the subject is classes and careers etc
5/21/2006 6:00:36 PM
^^^Of all the people who can talk about knowing how to manage their finances, you are not one.
5/21/2006 11:19:06 PM
hahaha!!!
5/21/2006 11:24:30 PM
on what basis?p.s. telling me about bills two weeks into the month after I paid other bills is a bad example on your part.[Edited on May 21, 2006 at 11:25 PM. Reason : .]
5/21/2006 11:24:47 PM
ps. not anticipating the fact said bills have to be paid every month or two is not my problem
5/21/2006 11:26:35 PM
you should let me know about the bills earlier. I shouldn't have to go out of my way to find out how much I owe.
5/21/2006 11:27:01 PM
i think not having enough money in savings etc to pay simple household bills (at any point they pop up) is indicative of poor financial management.
5/22/2006 12:47:48 AM
rentelectricgaspay rent to live in house with electricity that i pay for by driving to my job
5/22/2006 12:57:42 AM
Personal finance shouldn't be a required class in college, it should be required in HIGH SCHOOL. Every person needs to learn the basics. People who don't go to college and have the lower earning power are immediately confronted with big financial decisions that they definitly have not had exposure on. WIth the lower earning power it is vital that they understand credit, financing, retirement savings, etc... hell, even how health care systems work.
5/22/2006 1:03:20 AM
i was a dual major in che and ch, but still took bus 225 on my own initiative, although i didnt need it. nobody is going to take care of you if you dont take care of yourself.
