I'm gonna see if USAA has a list of recommended mechanics in the area, but I can't call right now.
I'll be buying a used car sometime in the very near future, and want to get whatever I'm considering \a once-over before buying.

Does anyone have a strong recommendation for this type of thing?
One of my mom's co-workers gave her this:

Well I was considering buying this mustang one time. I took it to J&J automotive on hillsborough street. The guy looked at it and gave it a complete diagnostic test on the machine for $60. Once the guy that I was going to buy the car from left he came to my car and told me not to buy the car. They're pretty honest there. I usually get work done there.

Choice Auto Repair are very reputable for Asian imports. Not the cheapest though.

what kind of car is it?

if it's vw/audi/volvo (european) i would take it to absolute automotive in durham.. it's a drive, but that's one of the few places i would trust 100% with my car..

I'll second the Choice Auto recommendation. They are a bit expensive, but if you drive an import they do an amazing job. Nissan/Infinity specialists.

I let my roommate give me an opinion, but after that, I took the car to Allen's Automotive on Hillsborough Street.

I think a good or bad mechanic pretty much depends on your rapport with them as a customer. I always goto Allen's and am very happy with what they do.

don lee's tire and service just off of new bern/trawick. lake woodard? drive or something like that. they can get backed up sometimes, but do decent work at fair prices as far as most places around here go.

the phillip's 66 up there by campus on the corner of avent/western is usually decent also.
