I'm on my way back from OBX with the 'rents last night and my mom says to me, boy there sure are a lot of thrift stores in NC (cause she's visiting from NY). We decide to start counting, and sure enough we spot 17 thrift stores on like a five to ten mile stretch of Hwy 70 in and around New Bern. To me this just seems ludicrous. Has anyone else ever noticed this? I mean I'm sure it's not the richest town in NC, but is it really that poor there?

^^that holds true for most of Eastern NC

Eastern NC is not the most richest part of the State...

A lot of the economy in Eastern NC is based on agriculture

I'm from New Bern, and I dont really know what you're talking about. Havelock, and places like on the way to the beach have lots of places like that b/c of so many people moving in and out of the bases in the area... but new bern is just lotsa old people.. we've got lots of antique stores, but not really a bunch of thrift stores IN New Bern. PS- it's a rather rich town in some places, but the comment about the class divide is sadly true. You're either in a really nice neighborhood, or it seems like you're in the ghetto.. but definitely not a poor town in general.. now the places outside of it I can't say much for. PS- used to be the capital city for NC, and we invented Pepsi There are lots of perks, the river, close proximity to the beach, its not raleigh (yes I consider this a perk). HWY 70 doesnt even really show you New Bern, b/c its all bypass. James City area and Havelock has HWY 70 actually running through it.

yeah what part of new bern are you talking about? If you take 70, new bern is across the river... you're on a bridge for almost all of new bern...

did they set up thrift stores on the bridge?

i think you're confused...
new bern doesn't have a lot of thrift stores...
new bern has a lot of ANTIQUE stores...
there's a difference...
thrift stores are wear the poor and the trendy go...
Antique stores are were tourists go...
New Bern is a tourist town...
put 2 and 2 together yourself...

Ahhhhh, ok yeah I'm not from around there (or NC for that matter). Now that someone says the name Havelock I think that's where I saw the majority of them. I just had an atlas on me and the closest thing to where I saw it was New Bern, I guess it doesn't have every little town on Hwy 70 on there. And you were correct that I wasn't on Bus. 70, I was on the bypass. Thanks for the answers though, I was just curious.

jacksonville sucks asshole. havelock is worse. If it weren't for Morehead City and New Bern, that whole area of the world could be burned and no one would miss it. sept Bighitsunday

The mall in New Bern is useless. I despise it. They should just take it down.

that is true. growing up in MHC, we used to always go to jacksonville mall. But that's basically useless too. When's morehead city getting a mall?

They're too busy putting up "luxury condos" anywhere near water to put up a mall in MHC. They even took down JUNGLE LAND FOR FUCKING CONDOS. God damn it.

I know dude... it's depressing. The Sheraton and the Royal Pavillion on the beach have been sold to a contractor who will be building condos. THe circle at the beach is gone (which is probably a good thing). Jungleland is gone... but out there near wal-mart... if they can get the gov. to give up the Croatan National Forest, there's PLENTY of room for a lot of shit out there.

Well, they're putting up a new Lowe's in Cape Carteret and a new Wal-Mart in Havelock. I'm disappointed by the Hooter's as the only time anyone decent looking is there is during the summer when the college girls come home. But they probably won't give up the forest for a mall, even with Cherry Point so close and the tourists in the summer. And is it just me or does the Seafood Festival become worse each year? I only go for the clam strips and lemonade now.

Yea man, the seafood festival used to rock ass. I used to live on Bridges St. downtown during my childhood. But now it's all marines and skanks.

And unfortunatley, those skanks are the ones working at hooters

Yeah. They have got some TOREUP girls working at that Hooter's. I was going to go by there this week before I have to go back to Raleigh for summer classes but figured I could better spend that money on alcohol. I dislike the "rides" at the Seafood Festival. The people who run them look shady as fuck. The little black dude who runs the swinging boat has a guy standing in the background with a welding torch.

surfer_boy6, the Piedmont and Triangle areas have diverse classes as well, but there is money here. I have probably a better chance finding a good job here than in the Eastern part of the state. I consider the Piedmont and Triangle areas in the center of the state. Once you go past Raleigh, I consider that Eastern NC.

West Carteret. God that place was a dump. I wish I had gone to Croatan. At least it was new.

are they even possible in the southern outer banks? i know i saw some near kitty hawk and manteo but nothing but homes and condos everywhere else.

There used to be quite a few over on Atlantic Beach, but they're all being torn down for condos. I'm not sure about Emerald Isle, I don't usually make it down that far.
