I was told to move this outta the Soap Box and to the Lounge, so here it is:

Is it legal for an officer to place a parking ticket inside a vehicle if the driver does not give permission to the officer? Could that be constituted as unreasonable search or something similar? This happened to a friend of mine tonight and all of her windows were rolled up, which leads us to believe that the officer had to open to the door to place the ticket. Think there's any legal leg here to stand on or should she just throw herself upon the mercy of the court?

Why would you try to put this in Soap Box at all?

Why was your friend's door unlocked? I don't think a cop opening an unlocked car is illegal at all, especially if it was a windy day and may have blown away.

well the fact that you broke a law makes me think the cop deserved to give you a ticket, but the fact that he opened your door and took the liberty of putting it inside seems kinda fishy

That's what I'm thinking. I'm not attesting to my friend being innocent in parking where she did, I just think she should do what any reasonable person would: find a loophole out of this $350 ticket.

Oh, and the reason I put this in the Soap Box was because of the whole violation of the 4th amendent stance I was going with...and now I know better.

No idea if that is legal, but I'm assuming the ticket was for illegally parking in a handicapped space. Bad decision.

if your friend parked in handicapped space, she deserves the $350 ticket.

nothing reasonable about being whiney and trying to get out of a blatant parking violation.

reasonable to wonder how the cop got in the car perhaps.
