you have until the 15th to turn in your app. you're going to get loans.

Quote :
"SUMMER SCHOOL FINANCIAL AID: You will need to complete a separate NC State Institutional Application for Summer Financial Aid if you need funds for summer school. Those forms are generally available in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid by March 15 for the upcoming summer, and must be completed within specified deadlines each year. You must be enrolled for at least 6 hours in summer to receive a Stafford Loan. Generally this is the only aid available for summer school."

Study Hall next time.

It's loans, not scholarships or grants. And if she transfered you to Bill Cox, never call him again-he's never there, never returns calls, and is always about 2 weeks late on emails. I understand he's busy, but he's my adviser and I think I've spoken to him twice because I just so happened to catch him in his office. Call the assistant lady-she's much more helpful.

also, your financial aid caps out (at $10.5k for juniors and seniors, i believe) so if you've been using it for the past fall and spring, keep that in mind.

isn't your department paying you?

I thought all American grad students had fellowships/assistantships.

Maybe it's because my situation was a case where he helped right away, or I didn't get to go to school, but he never took more than two business days to return calls. Only ever dealt with him by email once.
At any rate, he's a million times better than my advisor, who is only any good if you are dealing with her face-to-face.

Well in my situation, he caused me to not get a $2500 grant because he didn't return my calls. I didn't know at the time that anyone else would/could help me because everytime I tried to call someone, they kept saying that ONLY he could help me. Now I know better and I just don't deal with him.

I blame both parties. I've had to hand-deliver a number of things before and/or go in person to make sure it gets done.

Financial Aid's website is out of date ... it says graduate stundents on a Federal Unsubsidized loan can only borrow $8,500 per year ... I think that number is supposed to be $18,500. Call and ask or go see them in person.

515 2421 is, in fact, the fin aid office #. usually staffed by some underpaid student who doesn't give a shit, and just wants you off the phone. know who to talk to before you call, if possible.

Well, if he's really gone then we're better off. I've been told before that I am not the first or only person to complain about him and they know how he is/was. But I don't mean to bad-mouth him...
She didn't tell me this, but the lady I deal with now is Julie Rice Mallette. She's the Associate Vice Provost for S & FA. I kow she's a busy lady, but she knows all the answers to all my questions right off hand, and always calls me back of she is too busy.

First, Bill Cox has taken a job with the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA) and no longer works at NC State. His last day was April 14th.

Grad Students can receive up to $10,000 in an unsubsidized Stafford Loan and up to $8,500 in subsidized Stafford money, depending totally on the EFC that the FAFSA gives.

Also, it is not too late to apply for Financial Aid for the summer. The last day to apply for aid for the first summer session and ten week session is Monday, May 15th. The last day to apply for just the second summer session is June 1st. The summer aid applications are available on my desk at the front of the office. Also, loans are the only thing available for the summer. Call your financial aid counselor to determine if you have any eligibility left and what your options may be. You can see the list of numbers here: http://www7.acs.ncsu.edu/financial%5Faid/staff.htm

To clarify this statement, the phones are handled by four full-time employees (I use to be one of them). While I cannot disagree with the underpaid part, I can disagree with the help that is provided. These folks handle your phone calls as well as they can while juggling the verifications and data entry for all the applications that you turn into our office. They do the best they can. If you do not wish to call our direct line, use the staff directory linked above to call your counselor directly.

This is not "bullshit." The summer is part of the 2005-06 academic year. If you have met your federal limit on the amount of Stafford Loans you can borrow then we cannot legally give you anymore Stafford money. Your only other option would be a Parent PLUS loan or an alternative education loan. We have to adhere to federal regulations otherwise we lose federal funding.
