I'm thinking Manteo/Hatteras/Nags Head/Kill Devil Hills/Kitty Hawk...and I know it's not realistic to go to all of them in the same weekend.

Buxton or Ocracoke are the best remaining Outer Banks beaches. I'm repost my response from a previous thread:

Ocraocoke Island is in Hyde County, you will drive through the very sparsely populated rural county through the tiny county seat of Swan Quarter. There you catch a 2.5 hour ferry across the Pamlico Sound to Ocracoke Island. There you will find a charming little village of about 700 residents. The Island itself is 16 miles long, but the village itself only takes up about a mile of it, the rest is protected National Park Service land. You can find a good deal if your search around. Try the Island Inn, or search the internet and call, you can find a good deal. Its probably different from any beach you have ever been too. They have a lighthouse and wild horses and stuff.

The Island isnt that big and there arent that many rooms. I have a pop up camper and camp for about $30 a night with full electric and water hookups at the Beachcomber Campground (warm showers too). Plus its 16 miles long. If you have a 4x4 you can drive out to the inlet and enjoy the view there. If you have a regular car, u can park on the side of highway 12 and walk over at one of the many beach accesses. You can literally find a stretch of beach all your own, with noone around, and not have thousands of people around you. Absolute peace and solitude. At the beach in the Summer. Its amazing.

check out the tranquil house inn in downtown manteo. it's right on the water, walking distance to shops/rest. and some historical sites. i'm not sure of the price, but it might be worth looking into.

If your doing the actual Outer Banks, go to "Duck". It is a great place and there are some really cool restaurants and small hotels up there.

For camping, I highly recommend the "Waves" area. It is half of the way down the banks going towards Ocracoke Island. On the map, it is the outer most point in the line of islands. There are some nice campgrounds there and a few nice restaurants. And the beach there is amazing.

Camped for a weekend at kitty hawk over spring break. For the most part, i was either asleep or drunk or on the beach, so I can only suggest tradewinds (chinese), and the coffee shop two doors down. Both are EXCELLENT.

kitty hawk, kill devil hills, nags head all run together, you drive one road for 7 minutes and you are in all three towns. manteo is minutes away, hatteras island is minutes away. Hell, it's less than 3 hrs from the north end of corolla to the south end of hatteras island with normal summer traffic, much less now.

meh, depending on what you are looking for in beaches they are pretty good. Ocracoke is awesome for getting away for a weekend or longer. Buxton leaves you close enough to what few attractions there are on the northern beaches.

the town of duck is a tourist trap town, that's all it is. the restaurants are pretty good overall, but nothing special to make me want to stay there.

rodanthe/waves/salvo are the same as kh/kdh/nh, one road, towns running together so there's no difference. Some decent restaurants but I'd rather stay in Avon or Buxton.

If you want "the beach" it doesn't really matter. Find the cheapest place NOT in kdh from mp 5-8 (the beaches are fairly torn up from the winter storms). If you want attractions (lots of little shops) your mother or gf may like manteo or duck are good. Nothing is far enough away that it is a long drive to see, unless you want to go to hatteras village and are staying in duck.

btw I have lived in Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills, and have been fishing Buxton and Ocracoke for a long time. Theres a reason why Ocracoke is one of the best beaches in the US. I should be spending a week there in June or July.

dont do ocracoke. the ferry ride is way to long for nothing. my visit to the beach was accented with a bike chase by yellow flies. the beaches are littered with jellyfish.. A LOT OF JELLYFISH. Apparently the locals are immuned to the stings.

Ocracoke or portsmouth island

but I'd be happy if none of you fuckers showed up at portsmouth

I think it's the last great beach left in the state

^ wtf ocracoke is a cool place

it's not myrtle beach or anything like that, but it is a great palce to get away

and jellyfish stings are something you get used to

the beach itself of ocracoke is my personal fav...duck is just as nice

i am not expecting much for nightlife in the obx since it's mostly residential/family oriented beach towns. just need a fun place to hangout when the sun goes down. myrtle has all the nightlife, but its beaches are definately not favorable

Ocracoke is a long trip. It's better to work it into an overall banks trip, with a visit to Nag's Head, Manteo, Ocracoke, with a ferry trip back. It is definitely the best spot on the outer banks though.

If you want real nightlife though, go to Wilmington/Wrightsville like you have hundreds of times by now.

you can't seriously think that duck is a nice beach, can you? there is ZERO public parking anywhere near the beach, every street is full of vacation homes so the beach will have tons of people on them. the beach itself is red pebbles that hurt to sit/kneel on. Duck is a tourist trap of a town with no redeeming quality over any beach within 100 miles. The town closes shop at 6 or 7pm (except for a few restaurants) so there is no reason to really be there at all. If you want to go to duck for the shops, that's fine, go there one day, but to stay in duck is stupid.

yeah, nm, duck isn't that great of a beach...i had forgot the notes you listed. last time i went to duck, it was in spring when the water was cold...there wasn't a person around at all. the area has nice looking houses though. definately just a stop-by & visit town.

2-3 days to see everything from corolla to manteo to hatteras. Ocracoke needs a full day itself just because of the travel time.

it can be done quickly in one

but thats no fun

you'll spend mad time on a ferry

best bet is to take a weekend or a three day weekend

start off by going down 70, going to cedar island and taking the ferry to ocracoke

then maybe spending a day there, then head north and take the ferry to hatteras

maybe stay over night there or somewhere near there, then head north to kitty hawk, kdh, and then to duck, and corolla

then take 64 back

i used to go to hatteras village a lot

seemed like the nicest beaches and the fewest people, but i wouldn't go there unless you like deserted beaches and no night life

this was years ago though, and i'm sure it's already a lot more developed than it used to be.

Port O Call is too expensive for the small portions that you get. I would recommend Awful Author's. its about mile post 2 or something on beach road.

Some of what has been said is true, but most of it is crap, and ALL of it depends on how much money you want to spend or not spend.
I work out here in property management, pm me if youre interested and Ill give you teh story for your price range.

maybe any damn day of the week any time of year. mp 10 to mp5, nags head to kitty hawk. If it takes more than 10 minutes to drive that then there better be a big ass wreck and I'm taking the beach road. I drive this 4 times a day, every day, all summer.

^weekly rental or long term rental management?
