hechts is going to be the macys. lord and taylor is still up in the air. they're renovating the toys r us i believe for an old navy. a lot is goign on down there, but I don't think they're doing enough to compete with the other malls in the area.

The Lord & Taylor store can't be replaced by anything yet, because of a suit still under negotiations w/ their owners...they are about 1.5 mil behind in payments for that rental space, and the mall doesn't want another store from the chain to go there until it's cleared up...which is why plans to move Hetch's into that space have failed

The current hetch's space will be a macy's, but they are behind obviously, since they were scheduled to open six months ago

Also, on the back side, they are still underway on building condos w/ store space on teh bottom floors

I used to work at the Crabtree Barnes & Noble. There's been talk for a couple of years of expanding the store b/c almost all other B&N stores these days are 2 stories. That particular one is definitely the smallest one in the Triangle. A few years ago there was a rumor that the entire building would be expanded to 2 stories, at which time the B&N would build up. I've also heard a rumor recently that B&N would take over the Toys R Us space, but I don't think they'd want a store with such a huge footprint.

As for the Best Buy rumor, I really can't believe that BB would actually move. Best Buy is a destination store - people will go to the store regardless of its location. Considering how many people shop there, it would also be an absolute nightmare to add such a popular store with the limited parking available at that portion of the mall. Can you imagine that place around Christmas? There's no way I'd be willing to go to the store then - so why give up the decent location they already have?

My guess is that some other store will come and take Toys R Us' space. Maybe the building will become 2 stories, but I don't see that happening for a while.

Best Buy will move if they can negotiate a better lease with Crabtree or it expands sales/lease ratio.

crabtree valley mall is located at one of the most desirable locations in raleigh

if not the most desirable location its very easily accessible via the beltline or 540 plus it doesn't hurt being in the more upscale area of town where people actually can afford to go to the stores and spend alot of money

also they are building the biggest building in the state right across the street right now

its a pretty exciting area

where are they planning on putting the best buy? right now they have one less than a mile up the street on glenwood

best buy wants to get inside of circuit city because they are another 3 minutes out right now so they lose alot to cc. they seem to be building something over near steak and ale. lol the pizza hut and winn dixie that were there closed down years ago and still nothing. what a waste. im sure the land $ skyrocketed with the new tower coming up

when my parents first moved to raleigh back in 1987 they almost bought a house in a neighborhood about 2 miles from crabtree and the new skyscraper for like $110,000 now the house is probably worth 400k-500k they ended up getting a house closer to wake forest...

pretty ridiculous appreciation

the real estate scene in that area is definately going way up in value

my friend and i were just talking about this after going to Southpoint the other day. Crabtree is the best around, but it would be nice if it had a Nordstroms and a few other places.

^^ yeah Bank of America Corperate Center in Charlotte is 60 stories

Hearst is 47, plus they are building two more residential towers between 47-60 stories

Personally I'd rather drive the two extra miles to a shopping center that you can get in and out of in a few minutes. That area outside of Crabtree is easy enough to get to but frustrating to get out of. I've sat there for 10 minutes in the past waiting to turn right on Glenwood. The problem is that they have a stoplight a few feet down from an exit so traffic is always backed up to the point where you can never pull out. It is much easier to just leave the mall out the back and make your way back to Glenwood through the neighborhoods.

I'd imagine traffic would be even worse if there was a store in that area that a lot of people want to shop in. The lot out front isn't sufficient to hold the typical Best Buy volume. I guess people can walk from the decks.

I'm pretty sure that they would close the old location down, c'mon.

it hasn't flooded away yet...well at least it didn't during fran. there was some minor flooding though. But the builders of the soleil center will take care of the flooding problem at their end. i forgot what exactly though.

Macy's bought Hecht. The "integration" period has started - you can use Macy's or Hecht's giftcards at Hecht's right now, and the registry is on the verge of converting. They're starting to stock Macy's house brands (check out the cards on the earrings in teh jewelry department, etc). They're also clearing out stuff Macy's isn't carrying, especially in housewares (I think Macy's big house brand for household items is Charter Club). That's why there's all these crazy clearances and coupons in the paper and stuff - Macy's has already taken ownership and is working to convert the store to their brands.

What a stupid move for Crabtree. rabtree had the perfect opportunity to reinvent itself and it takes the cheapo route, all but conceding to TTC and SP.

no, to become more upscale.

Best Buy is the antithesis of that. Might as well build a Wal-Mart while they're at it.

What does your opinion of southpoint have to do with crabtree making a bad move?

Also, if you have some weird anti-mall sentiment, why are you even in a thread discussing it?

do'nt trust any rumors about what Hechts will be converted to Macy's... the Hechts at Triangle Town Center (which was built about 10 years too early) has been subject to the same rumors...

Crabtree, as it is now, is just what people think of when they think of a Mall... that's why it's the most visited in the state, because it's almost iconic in NC...
