Yeah, you're REALLY missing something.Pirates of the Carribean 2Superman ReturnsX3Da Vinci CodeMission Impossible 3That's five blockbusters right there off the top of my head. The latest release is PotC2 and I'm sure there are a few gems after that.I imagine more people miss the days when there WEREN'T summer blockbusters.Decided to check out IMDb. Cars (New Pixar movie) will probably be a huge hit with kids.Potential blockbusters (which I define as grossing +$100 million):Miami ViceClerks IISnakes on a PlaneThe Break-UpNacho LibreBTW, they're releasing a second Garfield movie. WTF?[Edited on May 3, 2006 at 5:44 PM. Reason : .]

The DaVinci Code is right up there with reality tv and country music on my "list of things that i couldnt care less about"I'm a huge conspiracy theory nut, and yet this doesnt intrigue me at all.
5/3/2006 5:43:11 PM

ok when i say summer blockbuster its part big hyped up movie that everyone anticipatesand the other is a really good movieso godzilla would be an example of the first and out of sight the second, barely a blockbuster thoughim mainly talking about armegeddon, independece day, star wars, etc.hey if all they put out is crappy movies then they're bound to make some money, i dont care about the box office it means absolutely nothing, its about making a big movie with alot of hype[Edited on May 3, 2006 at 7:01 PM. 5/3/2006 6:54:22 PM
ok, then i guess I sort of agree with you in that case.but personally i'm really anticipating PotC2, X3, MI3, SoaP, Clerks, & Miami Vice(b/c of Mann).and I'm guessing PotC2, MI3, X3, and the Da Vinci Code will top the list for most $$. and maybe Cars too.what's the diff b/t getting hype and making $$??hype creates the huge piles of $$ that show up at the box office...[Edited on May 3, 2006 at 7:02 PM. It probably helped that 1998 was before the advent of DVDs, HDTVs, and every dick on the planet blabbing on his cell phone.

5/3/2006 9:12:04 PM
Just so you know.Snakes on a Plane probably has a bigger following then Mission Impossible III.

Why the hell is The Big Lebowski missing from the 1998 lists?
5/4/2006 1:42:53 AM
its missing because i forgot it, i forgot it because it wasnt a blockbuster
5/4/2006 1:43:38 AM
I thought any really good movie was a blockbuster.
5/4/2006 1:45:18 AM
5/4/2006 1:47:03 AM
i'd say summer 2003 is the last "blockbuster" year
5/4/2006 1:47:40 AM
meh....i agree with the claims for higher quality in the past. Among other things, 1998 gave us Metal Gear Solid and Ocarina of Time.
5/4/2006 1:50:47 AM
im sorry but the only thing i remember from the big labowski was him setting his own croch on fire with a cigarette. but i gotta say the quality hit an all time low somewhere around 2001, 2002 and its steadily gotten better, but still far from the golden ages of 1998
5/4/2006 1:54:32 AM
^^ Yeah, I love those two movies.^ The Big Lebowski is a very highly regarded film by borth critics and the public. It was made by the Coen brothers, two of the best known producers of quality American film. Its cast included Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymore Hoffman. It's not bigger than Jesus, but, as films go, it's in the top ten percent.Let's look at the top 10 box office numbers from 2005, 2001, and 1998:2005380,262,555 Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)291,615,165 The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)289,994,397 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)234,280,354 War of the Worlds (2005)218,051,260 King Kong (2005)209,218,368 Wedding Crashers (2005)206,456,431 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)205,343,774 Batman Begins (2005)193,136,719 Madagascar (2005)186,336,103 Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)2001317,557,891 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)314,776,114 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)267,652,016 Shrek (2001)255,870,172 Monsters, Inc. (2001)226,138,454 Rush Hour 2 (2001)202,007,640 The Mummy Returns (2001)198,539,855 Pearl Harbor (2001)183,405,771 Ocean's Eleven (2001)181,166,115 Jurassic Park III (2001)180,011,740 Planet of the Apes (2001)1998216,119,491 Saving Private Ryan (1998)201,573,391 Armageddon (1998)176,483,808 There's Something About Mary (1998)162,792,677 A Bug's Life (1998)161,487,252 The Waterboy (1998)144,156,464 Doctor Dolittle (1998)141,153,686 Rush Hour (1998)140,459,099 Deep Impact (1998)136,023,813 Godzilla (1998)135,014,968 Patch Adams (1998)Everything from 2001, your "low point", and 2005 exceeded all but the top two films from 1998, Armageddon and Saving Private Ryan. Furthermore, your "low point" consisted of Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and, well, the list is right there. This ebb tide of blockbusters is absolutely entirely a part of your perception. Not that there's anything wrong with that.[Edited on May 4, 2006 at 2:03 AM. Reason : ]
5/4/2006 1:54:35 AM
excuse me for being a bit of a film nut....lord of the rings is fine and all, but i think most of the people here mean the inspirational and touching aspects of film have left the scene. I'd hardly expect LOTR and Harry Potter to do as well as they did had they not been novels in the first place. I mean, I think it's as awesome and ridiculous as the next guy, but movies like Snakes on a Plane are a direct corroboration of what I'm saying. We had movies coming out on a consistent and yearly basis in the 90's that were just plain awesome and thought provoking, like Pulp Fiction (94), Natural Born Killers(94), Casino (95) Goodfellas (90), Saving Private Ryan (98), The Matrix (99), The Big Lebowski (98).....the list goes on and on. Star Wars 3? Please. War of the Worlds was good, but not phenomenal. And just look at Disney- yes I have seen Lilo and Stitch, The Emperor's New Groove, and Atlantis, all equally forgettable, and it makes me wonder what the hell happened to the likes of Aladdin and The Lion King. Yes, there are shitty movies that come out every year, but only it seems to be in greater disproportion these days./ranting

the only ones I care about:1. Snakes on a Plane2. Clerks 23. Pirates of the Carribean

5/4/2006 12:53:08 PM
^ my point is proven, enjoy your snakes on a plane, but Your 2001 to 1998 comparison proves two thingsone, movies now make more money despite their qualitytwo, 2001 was full of bad movies that got alot of moneybut i gotta say the lineup for this summer is looking alot better than i originally thoughtaside from snakes on a plane, my gosh, that is just pure bs
5/4/2006 1:08:40 PM
I'm not entirely sure that a person can like movies but not want to see Snakes on a Plane.
5/4/2006 1:35:45 PM
5/4/2006 1:52:38 PM
I think now a days anthing that makes $200 million in ticket sales is considered a blockbuster http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockbuster_(entertainment) but that's a little misleading considering how expensive some of those movies are to make and market.
5/5/2006 1:31:47 PM
that would be an awesome tattoo for a hardcore airline pilot or something too
5/5/2006 7:04:25 PM
why does everyone keep saying snakes on a plane will be a blockbuster?cause a bunch of people on tww are making a big deal about it?
