I picked up a Yamaha seca II (xj600) today and damn if it doesn't redline in fith gear around 75mph. Could it possibly have come stock this way? I don't see how, but the only thing I can think of is someone changed sprockets, but why? It rides fine, but it sucks to not even be able to keep up with traffic on the beltline on a bike. I've done a few online searches, but haven't come up with much about this bike, so does anyone have any ideas as to what to do?

http://www.motorbike-search-engine.co.uk/classic_bikes/yamaha_classic.htmllists it as 130mph
5/2/2006 10:01:08 PM
that's what I thought too.......... but I was wrong, at first I thought I was still in 4th, but was definately in 5th already.
5/2/2006 10:04:52 PM
check if you still got the stock size srpockets (count the number of teeth on both sprockets)the chances are the previous owner regeared it for betrer acceleration
5/2/2006 10:48:32 PM
I'm going to check it tomorrow, but where would I find the stock numbers?
5/2/2006 10:50:21 PM
http://member.melbpc.org.au/~tjhudson/page5.htmthat says 117mph and says it has a 6th gear...
5/2/2006 10:52:59 PM
lol, have you tried to shift up to 6?
5/2/2006 10:53:47 PM
rofls, hey it's broke give it to me. my gsxr had a low top speed from aftermarket sprockets too. thus why i put the my new r6 back to stock .
5/2/2006 10:58:59 PM
haha, new... my ass.
5/2/2006 11:01:29 PM
http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/motorcyclespecshandbook/yamaha/1993-yamaha-XJ600DiversionS.htmeverything I've read up until the last two posts have said 5 gears, I definately tried to keep shifting upits a 1993 by the way, in case that makes a difference
5/2/2006 11:02:04 PM
16/48 sprockets for 92-03 according to kneedraggers.com
5/2/2006 11:06:17 PM
new to me. took down a srt4 today yay hahahahhaha
5/2/2006 11:08:08 PM
I thought they had 5 gears, but that one website I found seemed fishy.
5/2/2006 11:46:01 PM
my dad has the same bikecouldnt tell you top speed or #gearsi havent driven itand he is a slow ass driver so im sure he doesnt even know how fast it will go
5/3/2006 3:03:21 AM
jon had exact bike last year, his would hit at least a 100. i'll get back to you when i find out exactly where it topped.
5/3/2006 7:49:29 AM
at what point are you shifting? at what RPMs are you redlining?i mean, i can do 75 in second on my gs, around 11kyou gotta get up in that shit son
5/3/2006 10:04:10 AM
actually, it does have 6 gears, so in 6th with it at redline according to the tach ~10krpms its at 70mph. I checked the rear sprocket today and its has 48 stamped on it, so its stock. I'm waiting right now for it to cool to get to the front sprocket to see if its stock. I'm amazed at this, it sucks honestly.
5/3/2006 4:42:42 PM
dudemaybe one of your spark plugs isn't firing or somethingthats absurdyou don't weight like 500 pounds do you?
5/3/2006 4:48:25 PM
nope, 210lbs as of this morning. Absurd is pretty much how I feel, I'm going to go dig into it again and see what I can find
5/3/2006 4:59:23 PM
weight does not affect top speed unless you fat enough to create significantly larger frontal area
5/3/2006 6:18:04 PM
5/3/2006 6:33:18 PM
perhaps your speed sensor isn't right. May say only 70mph, but you could be going 100mph. Get someone else to help you see if your going the right speed.
5/3/2006 7:46:10 PM
well after reading this post i decided to go out and top my 00 yamaha R1 out in fith gear and it got to 153 at 10000 rpm still had 2k to go but i had to jump on the breaks.
5/3/2006 7:47:38 PM
5/3/2006 7:54:31 PM
id you ever find if yours have a 6-speed tranny? cause some of them defenitely came with a 6 speed.
5/3/2006 8:02:56 PM
^^ those sure seem to be saying the same thing to me. granted, he needs to learn when to use commas... but yeah[Edited on May 3, 2006 at 8:39 PM. Reason : .]
5/3/2006 8:39:05 PM
nah ur right the srt pwned the r6 i couldnt keep up wit all dat boost
5/3/2006 8:51:50 PM
lol.. i must have stared at the computer too much today.. i cant even read right...on a side note, i saw a SRT that would have given you a run for you money at the drag strip last weekend.
5/3/2006 8:59:09 PM
kyle, damnit. Learn how to use the comma and a period. They are your friend...
5/3/2006 9:30:31 PM
Ok, definately 6 gears (and yes, i shifted into 6th), stock sprockets and the speedometer couldn't possibly be off by 40 miles per hour.Any other ideas? At this point I kinda just want to drive it off a bridge
5/3/2006 10:12:40 PM
i can prolly look at it tomorrow evening or friday or something holla
5/3/2006 10:30:00 PM
i'll buy it fo 2 dollaz!
5/3/2006 10:37:58 PM
Never know, those olds bikes should have a mechanical speed sensor located on the front forks. It might not be rotating correct or something to that effect.
5/4/2006 3:18:45 PM
i wish the hawk had a 6th gear.. sob
5/4/2006 5:15:28 PM
If you are redlining it in 6th gear, regardless of weight/wind resistance/etc, the gearing is still the same and you should be at the stock top speed as long as the gearing is stock. The only explination is that your gearing has been changed by a large amount or your speedo is off by a lot.
5/5/2006 1:12:12 AM
did they make a different gear set for the transmission? Because the sprockets are stock, so that's the only thing left that I could be as far as gearing is concerned
5/5/2006 5:09:43 AM
Could be jetted horribly and jsut not making any power? I know I had a size too large main jet for awhile, and at WOT it would only go 80, if I used part throttle I could ease it up to 100+[Edited on May 5, 2006 at 7:04 AM. Reason : .]
5/5/2006 7:04:28 AM
When you made this top speed run, did you actually run it all the way to redline? The point is that if the engine is spinning a certain speed, the gearing is spinning a certain speed, and the rear tire is spinning a certain speed, all of which are independent of power output, drag, etc. The only way to be going slower in this case is to have the rear tire in a constant slip which I don't think was happening here. Did you let Igor take a look at it yet?
5/5/2006 9:22:25 AM
so i think I figured out what the problem is, the clutch was adjusted too far, so I loosened it up and it would easily do 100, so I rode it around a little bit and when I got gas I adjusted it back some. It ran fine for maybe 5 miles and while on the beltline I looked down the tach was way past redline, so i limped it home and no matter what i adjusted the clutch to it was back to how it was originally.so, at least I know what it is, any ideas on why it all of a sudden went back to how it was after it rode fine for a few miles?
5/6/2006 1:33:09 PM
You may need to get a new clutch pack. That is pretty crazy if your clutch is slipping that much. Once it is to that point, a good chance that adjustments aren't going to do anything.
5/6/2006 1:55:33 PM
my first bike was a 92 xj600, it did pretty good but it wouldn't do more than about 120 wound all the way out in 6th
5/9/2006 2:17:37 AM
120 >> 75
