Ive got an old computer I dont use anymore. I want to know how to get rid of the tower but remove all the vital shit(hard drive) and how to dispose of it so no one can find it and access credit card numbers and things. So how do i do that?

The HD is the only thing with CC #'s possibly on it. If you want to keep it you need to run some tools on it that overwrite the data 2-3 times with random stuff. I'm sure someone will post it. Otherwise...A Hammer is an easy way for cheap fun!

Download a program called Darik's Boot and Nuke ... it will create a floppy disk which will remove everything off of the hard drive.Afterwads, call Raleigh Recyling / Curbside Pickup / whatever it is and see if they'll take it. I had Charlotte come and pick up some old Packard Bell stuff about 5 years ago.

if you really care, clint you can just drop it off at the NCSU recycling facility on sullivan dr

You could always just take out the hard drive and donate the rest to like Goodwill or a school or something.

It's smart to wipe the hard drive. After that, if you're environmentally conscious, the circuit boards have trace amounts of metals that shouldn't go into landfills (though I've been guilty of violating this one plenty of times myself...)

If you want to protect yourself, take a drill to the harddrive, microwave it, burn it, bash it with a sledgehammer.Another way is to wipe the drive clean, then fill it up with a bunch of useless information to the max, wipe it again, and repeat as much as you want. However, this really isn't a sure thing and there is still a possibility of some personal and private information to be left on it. The only real sure way to keep it from getting to someone is to basically physically destroy the drive so that is unusable.

I've been told to put a bullet through the hard drive.I'm still screwing the damn thing in
