22WhiteSeniorCHASS1 no2 & 3 I’ve heard of women’s studies programs in general, I’m not sure what specifically I’ve heard about for ncsu.4 & 5 No.6 It’s not disinteresting material, but getting 1 major in 4 years is a lot work (especially if you switched majors more than once, or had physical injuries to slow you down, or deaths in the family etc) so there isn’t time for it if you are already going for something vocational like engineering or something else that you have an even stronger interest in like philosophy.7 Yes8 All academic courses have a chance to show me new information. Being a CHASS major in general you still get several professors who focus a little bit on gender issues, so I don’t think women’s study’s would be that novel or deep, but I enjoy being a student so if I had the time I would have gotten something out of a women’s studies class.9 N/A10 Yes11 Yes12 NO13 Its not necessary, but there might be something lost without balance.14 No. Lots of CHASS classes are like that.15 No, I haven’t knowingly met anyone who meets the criteria as I recall.16 Probably the rolls of women through history, important women through history, women characters in literary works like Medea & Lady MacBeth, women’s rights stuff, etc17 Probably the same stuff that goes on in a regular class room.18 Someone else paying for the class. Women’s issues are interesting, but there are so many interesting classes at NCSU that I didn’t get to take & I’m a graduating senior, it would take someone paying for the class to bump it high enough on the list.19 N/A20 Someone very interested in women’s issues. (of course people think of the stereotypes used in jokes, but I think most people can distinguish between that & reality) I’ve person met people who met & others who break the stereotype, but either way that are people very interested in women’s issues. I think probably the ones who meet it just stand out more.21 Someone very interested in women’s issues.

The subject matter damn well better be something like "Female gender as a weapon abroad" or "Vaginas in combat". 20. Reason : -200 level classes at State, I always felt, were dumbed down a bit]

Is ther sufficient academic merit to justify a women and gender studies major?
4/27/2006 4:45:53 PM
Gender Studies is a multidisciplinary fieldyour answer is yes but I don't feel like going into why
4/27/2006 4:49:57 PM
Even being a humanities guy myself, I don't see that much merit in a multidisciplinary study as a major. Sure as a minor it is good, but really what career (or graduate program) does it prepare you for?I think having majors like Women's studies and African American studies cheats people out of getting real preparation for life.

Females may take this as well, since many still wanted to have input, I decided to make a section in the report for the female opinion.

wtg, im sure he meant 200 lvl humanities. i dont beleive they are easy A's. i got a B+ once (maybe 2x) in my various sociology, psychology, etc electives. i dont read the book though, so thats mostly if they throw in those trick questions.i guarantee you could get a lot more out of those electives than i did if you tried, but lets not front; humanities are a lot easier for engineering majors than the other way around.
4/28/2006 9:29:29 AM
^agreed there. Yes, I took 200 level humanities courses. But there were people majoring in that shit struggling. I took PS205 and didn't even buy the book and got an A+. I took some harder humanities. EC301 and EC302, EC305, EC340 (econ minor). Didn't breeze through those but they were a HELL OF A LOT easier than my 300 and 400 CSC courses.
4/28/2006 10:27:42 AM
depends on the kind of humanities & the kind of non humanities course you are taking. some physics classes, like the astronomies are ridiculously easy as are some intro engineering classes. some 200 level humanities, like medieval philosophy, can be challenging.
4/28/2006 10:43:10 AM
My humanities courses: Modern American History, Modern European History, Intro to American Government, Intro to Philosophy, Intro to Economics, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Financial Markets and Institutions, History and Technology, Free Market Analysis.I found them all with the exception of Macro and Micro to be extremely easy.
