he needs an SATA2 raid-able PC with 1-2 PATA channels for older HDsprocessor doesn't matter - no celeron or cheap shit. he's running a mobile AMD 2500+ right now so anything above that - leaning towards AMD's 64bit stuff since AM2 is coming out soon.he wants to use his 1 GB of DDR400 and maybe throw in some more cheap RAM, at least another GB.he has an Antec ATX 430w PSU already.he'll need a new case, mobo, proc, maybe heatsink, ram, vid card (pci-e obviously), and dvd burnerhis only specification is that it is reasonably priced (300-350 + your 50), and is quiet/kept cool.he might need to buy things over time since that much cash might not be available all together.

300-350, that might buy you a decent processor

^^ he just wants someone to build the whole thing for him - the hassle of looking for cheap parts on the deal sites and stuff is up to them. he keeps up with the deals, as do i, but he's willing to pay someone to put it all together and choose the best parts for the money.^ are you fucking stupid?

case (35)mobo (100)proc (100)maybe heatsink (25)ram (40)pci-e vid card (130)dvd burner (30)est. total: 460so let's say he skips out on the ram and dvd burner right now, that brings it down to 390 which is in his range.

all i'm saying if you are paying those prices for those items its going to be a shitty computer
4/26/2006 11:55:40 PM
Dude if he want's a new setup, it's going to be about 1200. Tell him to sell the old shit on ebay for reinbursement, or stalk up on the classifieds. I'd be willing to put it together for him and procure the parts, but I charge 200. 100 for setup, and 100 for my services finding the proper parts. 50 is fucking lube.

Coming from a competitive FPS gaming background, the single most misunderstood concept with novice builders is dealing with budgets, understanding what the system will be used for, and price/performance ratios. The pointless oohrah/fetish for unjustifiably expensive hardware always seemed amusing to me.Anyway, I can slap something that fits your bill (sub-400) and purposes. I could definitely use the $50 and I can start on Wednesday (5/3) if you don't find someone before then.If you already have 1GB, getting another gig is a low priority in most cases. I'll need to get an idea of how far you're going to be pushing the system. Not many games really need 2GB, of the few, Battlefield 2 and perhaps Oblivion come to mind. Might be beneficial pending on exactly how much video work you do, etc.Shoot me a PM.

Also, the rough direction I'd take it is low-end 939 64bit (maybe 754, pending market) and search used parts first and fill in with NewEgg. Specter check your inbox.[Edited on April 27, 2006 at 12:47 AM. Reason : spel gud]

[/haters]he's on a budget. stop hatin'anyways, yeah low-end is all that's needed - he mostly uses it for e-mail/web/docs/watching tv and movies. he wants the machine to be better at photoshopping than his current one and he wants to be able to do some occassional video editing very rarely.
4/27/2006 1:02:59 AM
I will build him a machine
4/27/2006 1:29:22 AM
Just let me know what you decide to do. I can't start until next Wednesday when I'm practically done with finals.

for that price you are looking at a a64 3000+ (114 retail boxed)2gb memory el cheap but thats fine (70-80 for another 1gb stick)any number of SLI nforce4 motherboards (79-99)gf 6800 128mb video (139 w/ rebate)16x dvdrw (38 bucks)case (el cheapo balls, but hes already got a psu, 9.99+13 shipping)Comes to $475, and thats on the dirt cheap. But he will get a fucking hoss machine.300-350 he aint going to hit his pricepoint. Without the ram he can do it for 400ish.The rest of yall are fucking morons, 64bit athlon 64, 1gb, nf4 sli, 6800 video and dvd burner?Thats PLENTY of machine for even a regular gamer.BTW, its worth the 80 bones for 2gb, so he can run dual channel. Bit performance boost, especially with ddr400 on the nf4 board.[Edited on April 27, 2006 at 2:49 AM. Reason : .]
