So I just got a new car about a month ago and just noticed last weekend that one of my directional tires was put on backwards. I had it taken off and put back on the right way yesterday, but I was wondering if it being driven faceing the wrong way could cause any problems. And if I should maybe replace the tire all together now.

Shit naw. For somebody from JoCo, you sure are going about this in a high-falootin' way.The only real issue is that the tire's traction characteristics are diminished if run the wrong way, and your handling could suffer. But if you put it on the right way, then this becomes a non-issue.Now I have heard tell that if you run a tire in one direction long enough, then the belts tend to "wear in" in this direction, and reversing direction can lead to belt stressing issues and possibly a broken belt (you'll feel the bulge if this happens)If the tires aren't that old, then I wouldn't worry about it at all. Hell, if you're half the cheap bastard that I am, then you wouldn't worry about it period.

not trying to be "high-falootin"...I just don't know too much about cars and really don't want to be stuck beside the road trying to change my own tire. That would be a sight to see
4/20/2006 12:39:35 AM
if it was only like that for a month its no problem at all
4/20/2006 12:40:43 AM
Why not? Lots of us do it all the time. Who cares? The big thing is to have the jack, spare, and wrench to begin with. That's what's failed me so many times.

I have no idea how long the tire has been like this. I'm guessing not too long since the tires still have a lot of tread on them. I figured it would be fine, just thought I'd check.

i put my back tire on my bicycle on backwards two years and i havent had a problem.
4/20/2006 12:45:09 AM
does it make you pedal backward?
4/20/2006 12:49:13 AM
^david, you're a moron...
4/20/2006 12:49:35 AM
that's real reassuring, thanks

AAA is the way to if you know nothing about cars and want to be safe. they got my ass all the way in virginia at 2am once and towed back to raleigh with no extra charge. it be reasonably inexpensive expecially with a family plan.now as far as the directional tire go you be allright

i dunno about the directional belt wear in thing. people flip flop certain track tires on the wheel all the time to get more use out of them. if its safe enough for 125+ on a track it should be fine for the street..i'm sure your tires are all good[Edited on April 21, 2006 at 8:45 AM. 4/21/2006 8:44:19 AM
^ yeah, but they dont run them backwards.. they flip them b/c the racetrack alignment (lots of camber) usually causes uneven wear side to side (inside faster than outside)that being said, i've run r-compounds backwards before and didnt have a problem
4/21/2006 9:00:58 AM
oh yeh i was thinking flipping it on the same wheel on the same side of the car. then itd be backwards. but of course you could it put it on the other side of the car and its forward.HOT DAMN!

running directional tires backward was tested by a company. I don't remember which right now. They found, only mild decrease in dry performance, no decrease in traction, heavy decrease in wet handling.

you niggers and your tests.
4/21/2006 11:15:43 AM
Just stating what I remember, and those were different categories. Also, tread life was not effected.

thanks guys for all the help That's how I noticed something wasn't right...driving in the rain was a real bitch.
