Even in my younger days I didn't really understand how there could be someone playing in the maojr league that had as little offense of Raf.

DAMN .221 WITH 2 CAREER HOMERS...THIS GUY HAD TO BE THE BEST FIELDER IN BASEBALL..
4/19/2006 9:17:29 AM
Ryan Leaf. Period. At least this guy lasted, and probably wasn't a top 5 pick. Ryan Leaf sucked, was insane, and devestated the Chargers for years.[Edited on April 19, 2006 at 9:21 AM. Reason : d]
4/19/2006 9:21:19 AM
Rafael was always a crowd favorite and he played some mean D. He wasn't the best fielding shortstop ever, but he rarely messed up.But yeah, I still don't understand how he stayed in the starting lineup for so long on some above average teams.
4/19/2006 9:35:18 AM
he didnt stay in the starting lineup. he was pretty much a career backup. just goes to show you that if you can play defense, you will stay in the majors for a long time.
4/19/2006 9:39:51 AM
Ryan Leaf would fall into the bust category. I think the thread is about players who somehow managed to have a lengthy career yet they sucked. Danny Ferry would be my nomination.

Belliard wasn't a power hitter, its like saying ichiro is no good b/c he doesn't hit 30 home runs a year (i'm not comparing the two or saying belliard is anywhere near ichiro, just an example)he got on base 1/4 of the time (which isn't great, but its ok), and was fast as hell (great pinch runner), plus he was pretty good in the field. he found a niche and filled it, not every baseball player has to have a .300 average with 30 hr's and 100 rbi's to be valuable and usefull to a team.Plus, when he was starting, he usually led off, which makes it harder to get rbi's. a more useful stat for him would be runs scored.with that said, my vote goes to shawn bradley, his height is the only reason he steps foot on the floor, and he gets always gets owned by any decent big man.

I loved Belliard. I looked at him as the team's good luck charm.
4/19/2006 1:34:13 PM
Ryan Leaf overhyped and sucked ass
4/19/2006 1:37:53 PM
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=bellira01after looking at all of his career stats, he did suck pretty bad. the only thing that was remotely good is his fielding % which was alwayst above .900. I guess my memory of him is from too much of a braves homer perspective. I offically retract my lame attempt at defending him.....
4/19/2006 1:46:28 PM
http://baseball-reference.com/b/bellira01.shtmlHis baserunning and fielding stats really aren't good either. Oh and the most runs Belliard ever scored in a season was 36 over 149 games... not good.

Belliard was never a hitter. He was a defensive specialist, and you can't judge defense soley by fielding %. He never had more than 353 AB in a season, and he spent a lot of his career as a late-innings defensive sub. He could never hit. Never ever ever. Never[Edited on April 19, 2006 at 1:56 PM.
