i think it's because of my computer, because i've had the windows open all day. can a computer throw off that much heat? (i'm talking about my desktop, not my laptop.

Your place with the windows open is going to get at least as hot as the shade temp today, which was around 88.Then you add on that you have materials that can get hotter than the shade temp soaking up sunlight and conducting that additionally into your room, plus all the equipment that was on and you get hot rooms.I left my windows closed all weekend while I was out of my home, kept the blinds closed, and when I got home it was 79 downstairs (upstairs might have been 83-85).

sorry... i'd rather it be warm than stuffy inside.
4/16/2006 9:18:11 PM
It isn't stuffy in here at all, the humidity is in the "dry" range by my thermostat (I don't have a quantity scale).
4/16/2006 9:20:11 PM
i find that my apt stays cooler if i keep all of my lights off, no blinds open, and the door and windows shut with my fan pumping vs having doors and windows and open.
4/16/2006 9:23:00 PM
right, but that's depressing!
4/16/2006 9:29:05 PM
plus i have pets, and i like to keep it aired out.
4/16/2006 9:29:33 PM
get a fish and/or a plant, and maybe it will not be so depressing to youget a good vacuum and carpet freshener, and you can tame your pet's odors[Edited on April 16, 2006 at 9:32 PM. Reason : s]

air circulation is a good thing. i like it. i guess i'll just have to live with it being warm.
4/16/2006 9:35:52 PM
true true

don't know if you can do it at your place, but when I used to live in Owen Hall (before they put in AC) I'd take the inner window out of the track and lay it flat, stick two box fans in the window and put foil pans filled with water on the flat piece -- nice cool breeze, almost as good as AC
4/16/2006 9:55:25 PM
Now would also be a good time to test your AC out for the summer. Run it now for a few days, it's not going to cost you all that much. When it's a little cooler at night open a window downstairs or at one end of the house and at the other end or upstairs put a box fan in the window blowing air outside (or if you have an attic fan).
4/16/2006 9:56:11 PM
well, i'm a jew and don't want to use my AC. i'm not going to be at home much at all during the day this summer, so i don't think it's going to be that big of a deal.
4/16/2006 10:09:09 PM
where did you think the 300 watts from your ATX power supply went?
4/16/2006 11:11:51 PM
say what?
4/16/2006 11:16:58 PM
english mother fucker do you speak it?
4/17/2006 12:49:38 AM
what's an ATX supply doo-hicky?

Threads like these are why Smath shouldn't be allowed in TT.

i, too, prefer a little heat to stuffiness/depressing blinds closed all the timethat said, this thread only has bearing in tech talk by a stretch of the imagination
4/17/2006 11:07:59 AM
actually i made it in here because i am concerned that my computer throws off too much heat, which i think it does. but oh well.
4/17/2006 11:20:52 AM
That'd be the newfangled ATX power supply that you'd be looking out for (the power-supplying component in your computer). It just makes heat. And yeah a computer can make a room unbearably hot and uncomfortable with no AC on, especially if you're running the computer on fairly high loads fairly often. If it's idling and you've got good ventilation, though, it's probably not the problem. The problem is probably more due to the fact that you don't have the AC on and it's hot outside.[Edited on April 17, 2006 at 12:24 PM. Reason : Haha, I wish I knew why I kept doing that.]
4/17/2006 12:23:13 PM
oh... i've had a game on pause for a couple of days now... maybe that's it.
4/17/2006 2:18:49 PM
I guess a good basic way to check the load would be to goto the task manager (Ctrl Alt Del) and see if the processor is at 100%? Or what other factors affect the load? [/noob]

This thread makes the Eniac cry.

My office is the hottest room in my house. When my PC, monitor, and TV are all running it gets toasty... turn on the overhead light and you can easily break a sweat at night.
4/17/2006 4:19:23 PM
^ Yeah, it was something like that in my room yesterday. It didn't help that my room faces the sunset, too.
