Simply songs that really hit home when it comes to faith... be it finding God or leaving him behind.

pretty much anything by third day

I fucking LOVE me some Jesus music.

Sufjan Stevens, in particular "Seven Swans" and "The Seer's Tower". His religiously-themed music breaks my fucking heart. It makes me want to believe in something.

Lift to Experience's album The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads. Texas post-rock about the apocalypse taking place in Texas.

The Carter Family's, or anybody's, really, "No Depression".

"Styrofoam Boots" by Modest Mouse. Fucking LOVE it. See also: Kurt Vonnegut's The Sirens of Titan.

"God Makes No Mistakes" by Loretta Lynn.

And basically any old folk/country/mountain music.

I'll try and think of some more later. For an agnostic, I eat this shit up.

Jars of Clay - World's Apart

always touches my soul

its the only christian song that has made my personal Top-20 lists, and it normally ranks pretty high

By the way, although I hate it when people make generic categorizations about genres of music,

ALL

Dear God (teehee), I love this song.

It almost made me start up a legitimate conversation with Gary once.

eh, almost everyone is an agnostic at the end of the day.

there are agnostics who are 99.9 convinced that there is no God, and there are agnostics that are 99.9% convinced that there is a God, and for the most part, all of the above are freaks.

The rest of us normal people fall somewhere between those two extremes.

^^true, but it's not so much because it's Christian. it's because it's "_____ rock." I mean, a band that had 100 songs, and every single one of them about getting blow jobs would be lame, too.

Deicide by Deicide.

no lord shall stand before myself

i can strike the light and see through the truth
for i'm the deicide, dominus, what could you do
thou has falled you now, one again and always will
on the cross, forgotten son, a sacrifice it had to be done

[chorus:]
died for me, well that's too bad i don't believe
killed by sins of the evil what i am
your destruction, reasons of a world in pain
blind desciple, you will never live again

wage of death, course of life
unsematic birth of the deicide
eyes of pain, pleads of death
as you're put to rest

three days to rise
if he lives again he is sure to die
i killed jesus
just to see him bleed on his pulpis throne
i am evil
i'm the deicide and i killed the lord
no more reasons
i will kill the world in another form

i rule this world

nail him

[lead - brain]

i can strike the light and see through the truth
for i'm the deicide, dominus, what could you do
thou has falled you now, one again and always will
on the cross, forgotten son, a sacrifice it had to be done

[chorus]

Cool Hand Luke (basically everything. one of the most uplifting bands spirituall ive ever heard)
MeWithoutYou (great great open, down to earth and easy to relate to Christian lyrics)
Hopesfall(old stuff before satellite years)
some of the old Beloved
one song off of the 2nd as i lay dying CD

and i really like the lyrics my own vocalist writes and for me, the songs that we write based on having personal connection to them are probably about the most powerful for me (playing them live mainly)

not familier, but the movie character Cool Hand Luke was an obvious Jesus-figure.

(not unlike John Coffey in The Green Mile in some ways)

I don't even think it's that as much as they're just bad bands. The mainstream of Christian rock is no better or worse (okay, maybe a little worse) than the mainstream radio rock we have now, it just has sappy Jesus lyrics over the top. This thread is the perfect example of the fact that great music exists in every style and genre. Bad music exists in every style and genre as well.

Unfortunately, there's been no strictly Christian artist that has broken big on the artistic level in critical circles. Pedro the Lion is the only band I can think of that has even come close.

^^^ They sort of exist on their own plane of publicity, along with seminal jazz and blues (OMG THEY'RE ALL BLACK) artists. My point was that there has yet to be an "it" album by an evangelical Christian artist.

oh yeah and "transfiguration" ~ sufjan stevens

and as spooky said "styrofoam boots" ~ modest mouse

does "if you're feeling sinister" by belle and sebastian count?

"randy described eternity" ~ built to spill

"the unanswered question" ~ charles ives. . . though since it's an orchestral piece and doesn't have vocals, i guess it technically isn't a song. . . . whateva

or leaving him behind
Shoulda put that in the title, almost didn't read this thread.

Imagine - John Lennon
Eulogy - Tool
Opiate - Tool (well...this ones more about the followers)
Cathedral - Crosby, Stills & Nash
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
Iced Earth (A lot of what they write deals with Demons/Angels)
The God That Failed - Metallica
Highway to Hell - AC/DC (oldie but a goodie)
Judith - A Perfect Circle

I would throw in a bunch of bands that sing general stuff too, like:

Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Slayer (eh..don't really listen to them)

then you got stuff like:

Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door - Bob Dylan
Jesus - Queen

....All those Christian rock bands can choke and die. They need to learn what the fuck music is. But if I must name a christian rock band.

Faith + 1

please do not do what was already stated in this thread and make blanket statements. you havent even heard 90% of the Christian bands that are amazing musicians and bands i garauntee you. youre just going by all the crappy ones that are available that youve heard and that do suck. i like a lot of hte music you listed, and there are a ton of Christian bands that i listen to.

Correct. The thread says 'for' or 'against'. I picked 'against'. I'm suprised that was not obvious from my other choices...but whatever.

i have to agree a bit... actual christian rock, where the only topic they sing about is god and jesus, is just horrible... and i heard alot of it being forced to go to a church school for a year in high school.

it stinks though, because it was all so bad back then (98 or so) i actually made sure to not listen to anything that was on tooth and nail for years.
