Its a dell that i got in '03 and i have tried to put different dvd's in but it wont even recognize that there is a disk in there. Do i need to take this in?

Are you sure it's a DVD drive and not a cd rom drive?

no, its a dvd drive too, it came with dvd software and ive played many dvd's on it. I watched one today and then i tried to watch another one after restarting the computer and nothing would work. And its been retail dvd's that i have tried to play

Look up your Dell Service Tag # on support.dell.com. Look for a utility called "Dell Diagonistics" under Systems & Downloads. Download it, put it on a floppy, reboot, run it. Contains tests for testing your drive and will determine if its faulty.
