http://www.okcupid.com/politicsthere are some problems with the way some questions are worded (as is the case with all of these quizzes, but i thought the results were about right).i don't agree with where they have Reagan and GW Bush depicted...i view Bush as much further south on the economic conservative scale, and Reagan/Bush should probably be swapped in terms of where they're at on the social scale.and John Kerry shouldn't be right in the middle.http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz.html[Edited on April 8, 2006 at 3:13 AM. I think it's safe to say that that test is retarded, a la these results:

You are aSocial Liberal (71% permissive)and an...Economic Liberal (35% permissive)You are best described as a:DemocratYou exhibit a very well-developed sense of Right and Wrong and believe in economic fairness. loc: (81, -57)modscore: (21, 43)raw: (2540)I would say that's accurate. This was funny I thought...

You are a Republican.Socially Conservative, economically moderate. I was closest to John Paul II.

On time, I helped the Advocates for Self-Government give this quiz to walkers-by in the brickyard, noting their results with pushpins on a giant poster-sized version of the chart for all to see. After a few hours, there were about an equal number of liberal, conservative, centrist and libertarian results, and very few results for statists--without exception, everyone who quizzed statist was wearing a military uniform.Fucking military tools.I don't think that most military fools should vote. I mean, the g0vt has a actual active hand in their brainwashing and re-conditioning. It should be no surprise that they blindly support government force as the solution to everything...... I know, let's give them 3/5ths of a vote

this was an accurate test, it put me exactly where i believed to be myself anyway... social liberal, but leaning libertarian... on economic issues
4/8/2006 9:15:47 AM
It put me in about the right place (I'm not quite as libertarian as it suggests, but the questions were designed to exagerate, I guess).[Edited on April 8, 2006 at 9:47 AM. Reason : img]

Hmm, looking at this chart, it doesn't look like there have been that many recognizable libertarians throughout history... Just look at it, the chart is heavily weighted to the bottom left! Perhaps they should have included the founding fathers or something...[Edited on April 8, 2006 at 11:26 AM. Reason : .,.]

^well, i started a similar thread on a military forum, so I'll report back with the results. It's a forum that caters mostly to officers, and primarily aviators at that (and then mostly Navy and USMC aviators), so it's not totally a representative sample, but it is SOMETHING.
4/8/2006 3:19:22 PM
i hate these tests. the quesitons are soooo loadedlike "Most people are too stupid to know what's best for them."well, that's true, but it doesn't mean that i think government should make their decisions for them, which is what the point of the question is
4/8/2006 4:16:52 PM
http://www.politicalcompass.org/Is a lot better. Back when I used it I got:
4/8/2006 4:21:56 PM
^^yeah, the questions are often very loaded. when it's obvious, and the intent of what the question is looking for is widely different than how I would totally honestly answer it, I generally give them the answer they're "looking" for.^yeah, my graph from that one didn't display properly, but that's exactly where I scored.
4/8/2006 4:43:32 PM
This chart is interesting, I think.[Edited on April 8, 2006 at 4:52 PM. Reason : the thing that says "you" is not me, I just clicked through the test]
4/8/2006 4:52:11 PM
that chart says a few things to me:1. People are drinking 2-party Kool-Aid. Very often, they are falling along the party lines, and often to a pretty extreme, polarized degree.2. there is bipartisan support for libertarianism.3. there is little support for totalitarianism, and most of what is there is coming from the GOP.4. there are more "yellow-dog Democrats" who vote Dem even though they are more politically aligned with the GOP than vice-versa.5. Polarization--the heavy densities of the distribution aren't at the center. (not unrelated from #1).All of these things are, to me, pretty obvious and well known, but it's funny to see it depicted on that chart.and to summarize all of mine into one big picture:[Edited on April 8, 2006 at 5:50 PM. "Economically, you are closer to W.C.Fields. Socially, you are closer to Edgar Allen Poe... YOU ARE THE WALRUS!"
4/8/2006 11:05:27 PM
I am inclined to suspect that many of the people who are getting scored as "centrist" on here don't qualify in any conventional sense, but rather have several seemingly opposed radical positions that, when leveled out, indicate extreme moderation.
4/8/2006 11:21:05 PM
4/8/2006 11:21:06 PM
^^maybe, but while I never was specifically labeled a "centrist", I was never that far from it on any of the tests. I'm just comparatively moderate.

I think that it's pretty apparent (from that graph and otherwise) that there are two main poles that the politics in this country are centered around.you can look at it as most people--basically--seeing things in one of two ways, and the two parties being in tune with that enough to align themselves to match...or you can look at it the other way, and say "we have these two major political parties with these two platforms, and lo and behold, the electorate is heavily concentrated around those two poles, even though you'd expect there to be a more equal spread across the graph."While both factors might be at work to some extent, my money is on the latter being the primary force. People are drinking the Kool-Aid (or as we say in the military, "pressing the I BELIEVE button")
4/9/2006 3:00:20 AM

What I think this says is that the democractic voters are increasingly defined by social issues. While there are still very few economicly liberal republicans.I know that Libertarian -> GOP used to be a solid combo but is falling apart in the wake of the DLC on the left and the 700 Club on the right. If the Dems would wise up and drop their socialist roots they would rule.
4/9/2006 12:02:34 PM
it tells me i'm half libertarian, half democrat, but i can narrow down my voting options by answering this question:"is there any chance in hell this party will ever take the presidency?"
4/9/2006 12:15:27 PM
That's what it came to for me. I was on the fence about some of the statements, like "The government should subsidize small farms."Does that mean "The government should subsidize small farms but not big farms"? And what defines small and big, and how much in subsidies, blah blah blah.
4/9/2006 12:35:30 PM
No surprises here I guess...
4/9/2006 12:59:25 PM
Wait a minute, I thought you'd turned your back on those libertarian roots in favor of big spending, big foreign policy neoconservatism?
4/9/2006 1:14:05 PM
pwnt
4/9/2006 1:16:56 PM
^^I'm one of those "demand-side" conservatives -- I don't have a problem with government in itself, or government spending in itself, as long as the implementation encourages people to use the free market instead (thereby increasing self-reliance and reducing demand for government services). That's neoconservative government spending in a nutshell, and I'm all for it.And I don't see how any of those graphs goes against my foreign policy views. After all, if I believe it's good for us here in America why wouldn't I support exporting it elsewhere?
