Which will we get first in the area? I can't figure out why the triangle isn't higher up on the list to get fiber to the home or 'hood.

it's already to the curb for our pilot in san antonio, txwimax will maintain more coverage for a while though if not forevertelcos are coming out with complete voip/iptv/hsia solutions very soon

I think the "internet through electrical lines" is the best technology out there.
4/4/2006 12:36:45 PM
^ I can't tell if that was a joke or not, but in case it wasn't, that's a horrible, horrible technology that will see its final death knell very soon.

relax... you guys know a thread around here can't survive unless something idiotic is said.I would think that the RTP area would be high up on the "test" markets for the newest technology though.

We need thishttp://www.utopianet.org/corporate.htm
4/4/2006 1:10:51 PM
the test markets right now are where telcos have a large corporate presence - there are no large telco companies with large facilities in rtp are there?

I GUESS YOU COULD SAY FIBER IS GOING TO KICK BPL...TO THE CURB?
4/4/2006 2:00:46 PM

What do you mean by large?I'd guess at least 5 sites with several thousand people at them?I'd think SAS, IBM, GSK, Cisco, and maybe a few of the other tech players. Maybe I am overestimating by a lot.
4/4/2006 2:36:08 PM
he's talking telcos, not just large tech companies. The telcos are the ones who'll be deploying the technology made by Cisco or whomever.

ADSL is still selling like hot cakes... Fiber to the Curb just hit its matured generation this year with GPON(2.488Gb/s down/1.244Gb/s up) previous releases were APON(155sym) and BPON(622/155Mb/s). (theres also EPON but I don't think they have ever considered that a viable solution)the current deployments are BPON solutions and are going to get the shaft when this stuff goes mass market b/c the full release will most likely be GPON. WiMax seems like it should be a LOT easier to deploy however you are fundamentally limited in the speeds available wirelessly as well as subscribers (only so much RF/UW bandwidth available that the government doesn't suck up) but Verizon has pledged to put 4million fiber lines every year for the next 5 years... Bell south... not so much... SBC is another MAJOR player in the game. so getting a fiber run straight to your house isn't out of the question by any means... they've come up with pretty easy and efficient ways to do it (I.e. Passive Optical Networks = xPON)All the telco's formed the Joint Procurement Committy, to select viable solutions for FTTx. One major problem is that its only a loose standard and different company solutions don't work with one another. You have to have an All motorola or alcatel or whoever solution... bassically whoever makes the cheapest modem is going to win... Problem is that a triple play modem is crazy expensive... but then again so is that stupid Digital TV cable box that so many of us already pay extra for AND the road runner modem... so its not like customers aren't ready to pay more for provisioned 100Meg data lines.BUT The technology exists, it works, and its in the workings. The ADSL stuff that is hitting the market was developed in raleigh 8 years ago... so that goes to show the lag in R&D and when it hits the market.
