http://www.openoffice.org has a the free equivalent of access (http://www.openoffice.org/product/base.html).I've never used it (and havent used access much for that matter) so I wouldn't know if it is any good. But it would probably be worth it to check out before you spend $70+ on microsoft office.

I don't know how compatible the 2 are, but I've used base and I like it better than access really.

Some departments (I think Chem Eng was one) used to be able to download Access from MSDNAA for free.

If you are planning to use it as a database go with Access. Ton more support. Otherwise check out openoffice.
