"Texas to give Barnes a raise
Associated Press
Mens College Basketball News Wire

AUSTIN -- Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said he expects coach Rick Barnes to remain with the school and plans to give him a raise.

A coaching vacancy at North Carolina State has raised speculation that Barnes could be a candidate for the job in his native state. But Dodds said Monday the school has not formally requested to speak with Barnes.

Barnes said he has not received a job offer from North Carolina State.

"I haven't talked to anybody from North Carolina State," he said.

Barnes' salary was $1.3 million this season, and he received a bonus of more than $200,000 for reaching the Elite Eight round of the NCAA tournament.

His contract includes an automatic $50,000 annual raise. Dodds said he expects to give Barnes more than that, but he would not say how much.

Barnes, 51, joined Texas in 1998. The Longhorns have been to the NCAA tournament in each of his eight seasons.

The North Carolina State job opened up when Herb Sendek accepted the job as head coach at Arizona State."

Wow, what a misleading thread title.

Silly me to think that the article might actually have anything to do with the title.

Just because Raleigh is the state capital of North Carolina you don't see me running around saying police are more susceptible to give speeding tickets on Sundays...

^ agreed, things could still change if Fowler makes an attempt to contact Barnes before Texas makes a move on the raise. Not that Barnes would make a decision either way, but it is only implied that Barnes would have no intentions, not that he has squashed the thought.

""(Barnes) was given the impression that he is State's No. 1 target, but he's aware that they're talking to others, too," one source said Monday afternoon. "He has always had a lot of respect for that job, and they're talking about over $1.5 million (a year). That's a lot of money...

"I can tell you with absolute certainty that Rick is fascinated with the idea of coaching at N.C. State," the source said. "But I also know that he likes just about everything where he is now, and -- all things being equal -- it would be extremely difficult for him to walk away.""

If you believe everything you read in the paper, then you also would have believed that Herb would be the coach next year. Give it time. He may turn us down, but don't mistake coach speak for truth and think that if Rick wanted he'd come out and say "fuck yeah, I want it". We'll see what happens

It sounds like he's just getting a raise out of it, but weirder things have happened. I'll wait until the official announcement

i think it's funny no where in that article does it state that barnes has no intentions of leaving all he said was

"I haven't talked to anybody from North Carolina State" [quote]

that doesn't mean he isn't thinking about taking the job, it means he hasn't talked to anyone at nc state

i think there's at least a chance though. he's either negotiating like crazy w/texas to get his staff a huge raise or he is seriously considering the state job. otherwise he would have flat out said he was staying at texas w/no coach speak.

i'm thinking it's probably b/c he is negotiating with texas, but maybe we'll get lucky and he will come. barnes isn't my first choice, but he's a good coach and i don't think we could do much better. (unless calipari or wright wanted to come)

i just think they're better. calipari especially. look at his numbers, i think he had the 5th best start to a career ever as a head coach through 9-10 seasons. he got a 1-seed in the tournament with a c-usa team.

i like wright because he is younger than barnes and i like what he's done with nova's offense. also, getting jay wright here would pretty much guarantee chris wright re-committing here.

i think barnes is a redneck and too much of a hothead, but i would take him if he wanted to come, because chances are that the other two don't want to. and he hates carolina, which is a plus. also, if he came to state i think he'd be less likely to leave for a better job down the road.

if we get anyone from that 3, i'll be happy. i'm just saying if all 3 said they would come and we could pick, i'd rather have calipari, then wright, then barnes.

Doesn't mean that he doesn't want it, nor does it mean that they aren't talking, "unofficially" with middle men/ people who have established ties with him and NCSU.

Barnes being on the FUCK CAROLINA bandwagon will put him in good favor with our fans, so he will get away with more than Herb did.

That means, his people have talked to our people... Just no direct talking between us and him. Which means.. He just wants enough conversation out there to either see how much State will offer, which he can turn around and see if Texas will give him a raise.

Wright is young and already has some amazing success. Back-to-back Elite 8s, even though the injury to Sumpter forced him to run a four-guard lineup all year.

Five years at Nova (while making half of what Herb did), and to show for it: top-ranked recruits, top-5 rankings, tourney success.

I have the feeling the guy will win titles in the future, regardless of where he's coaching.

I like Calipari better as a coach.

I like Barnes better for our program. Calipari has some baggage, and he's a coach that is watched closely by the NCAA. That's the last thing we need. Granted, I want him like hell... but Barnes would be just as good of a hire, especially for NC State

Get Barnes to meet in Raleigh.... I garauntee he cannot say no if he comes here.... How long has it been since he's been to the RBC Center? Has he seen the investments in the Dail Basketball Center? Can we get him a Sloan style Sportcoat? Immerse him in State, and he will not say no.

Exactly... I think in the link I posted above there is something to the effect of, an Athletics director knows before he offers whether or not they will take the position. Just cause the all powerful all knowing, perfect [/sarcaism] doesn't report it, doesn't mean it isn't happening.

ugh, you people.

dont put all your eggs in one basket. more than likely he's not coming. with the players he should have coming back, Barnes could easily win a NC at Texas next year.

I swear, I could see you people bitching if we ended up with Mike Montgomery or Billy Gillispie, two very successful coaches who are probably more likely than Barnes to come here.

I had been contemplating upping my pledge for a while now, and I had the money. I would probably double it if Barnes was coming.... I want our teams to be successful. I will always contribute as much as I can to our university....

We've supposedly informally offered Barnes a package upwards of 1.5-2 mil per the update on Scout.com'

Montgomery is out. Calipari cannot be confirmed

Quote :
"It sounds like this job is really a hot opening. Word is that Fowler has been overwhelmed with the amount of responses from coaches, agents, etc. trying to get a foot in the door for the NC State coaching job, and should Barnes reject an offer from NC State we imagine the position would be wide-open. With the amount of cash NC State appears to be offering, you can believe the Wolfpack will land a very, very good coach. It just might take some time, which should be fine if the right coach is hired.

PackBacker,

You conveniently left out that Texas is reportedly going to give him a raise up to 1.9 million. So money will not be the reason Barnes comes here.

This motherfucker is playing us for a raise....I can just feel it.

at this point I think Barnes knows he is in a win/win situation, he gets a job he wants and gets PAID well to do it, or he stays where he is and earns bank in texas.
