Yesterday while doing some yard work my dog stumbled across a nest of baby bunnies. I took a look at them and they were fine. I covered the nest back up and placed an "x" with twigs on top of the nest so that I would know the mama bunny came back. Well the x is still there and I took another look at the babies and they are alive but were jumping up, I'm assuming cause they hoped I was mom. What are some options? I don't want these little guys to die.

they'll be fine.At my parents place, dad used to uncover several nests every time he mowed the lawn. just keep your dog away from them, and don't touch them, and touch as little of the area around the nests as little as possible

KittyB might take themI mean, she fed those possums and they aren't nearly as cute as rabbits ]

leave them alonemother rabbits only nurse their young once a day. so you're likely to never see the mother with the babies. the worst thing you can do is to continue disturbing the nest and/or remove the babies.baby rabbits (wild) are extremely difficult to hand raise in captivity.you can try contacting the piedmont wildlife center. they can give you advice if you're really concerned the mother might be dead or missing. http://www.piedmontwildlifecenter.org/

yesterday, before noon is when they were found. The mother should have come back twice, last night and this morning and hasn't...the nest was not disturbed since I found them yesterday. I called a wildlife rehabilitator and explained everything and she told me to bring them to her. So, I guess that's what I'm going to do.
4/3/2006 6:10:25 PM
i've found a lot of them along with some rats in bales of hay... fun stuff

my mom used to to do wildlife rehab. Baby rabbits were impossible to keep because they kept breaking their own damn necks trying to hop out of the box or whatnot.

It's possible the mother rabbit could have abandoned them for some reason or have gotten killed while away from the nest If the x is still there I would call the animal shelter. They can easily be nursed by hand.

nigga didnt pay child support
4/4/2006 12:14:54 AM
rabbits are small and can squeeze through stuff. it's way more likely that she's just getting around the crap left on top of her nest.really, just leave it alone.

too late; the baby rabbits have been removed and fed to the dog as wiggly rabbit nuggets. it was like watching the nature channel in my own backyard. oh the depravity of the food chain!
4/4/2006 11:17:46 AM
i think there is a nest of rabbits behind my house as well...everytime when i come home either at night or after 5ish...there are like 10 of them running around.
4/4/2006 11:39:59 AM
maybe the mom is staying away because you are stalking her nest, not to be a jerk, but the more you keep bugging the nest the more harm you are actually doing
4/4/2006 11:43:54 AM
the mom is staying away because she doesn't want to become dog food like her babies did.
4/4/2006 2:15:39 PM
poor little guys
4/4/2006 2:24:06 PM
4/4/2006 2:43:05 PM
you could step on them with high heels and then post pictures in chit chat
4/4/2006 2:43:25 PM
aha
4/4/2006 3:18:00 PM
sticks were probably too heavy for the mom to move so you did a good job driving away the source of the babies food.

Dude, I didnt put fucking trees on the nest...they were twigs...maybe weighing an ounce or two a piece. Either way, it doesnt matter now.
4/4/2006 4:54:34 PM
I'd be pretty freaked out if I came home to find twigs blocking my door.

I found a bunch in my yard last summer.... I put them in a tank inside for a bit and gave them lettuce.... then I called a vet friend of mine who said that lettuce could kill them, and their best chance was to put them back out in the yard... so I did
