Hello, I'm just wondering about this course. I hear from alot of people that it is really time consuming, not necessarily hard, just alot of work, but I really wanted to get it over with next semester. Thus far next semester, I am taking ZO 421, GN 413, BCH 454 and lab, BCH 455. Do you think I can handle GN 412 along with these other classes?

don't take the class if you can get out of it. way to much work for a 1 hour course and every one who teaches it, grades hard. I know for micro you have the option of taking the biotechnology course (BIT) and you are supposed to learn a lot more.

i haven't taken any of those other classes, but GN 412 is a lot of work for a 1 credit coursetypically, you end up staying the whole time (and sometimes over) during the actual lab, and dr. gardner is a very strict grader, so you have to turn in quality work (as well as just having a lot to do in general)overall, it's not too bad if you're used to a life sciences major course load (and you're taking bch so i assume you are), just know that it's more work than you'd expect from a 1 credit course

The lab takes the full time, and I spent 1-2 hours per week outside of class doing the lab reports (one or two may have taken longer). It's one of the more involved labs I've taken. If you're looking to just show up for an hour a week, you'll be in for a shock, but I promise it's not so bad.GN 413 totally kicked my tail. More than any other class in my entire college career. The "lecture" style (if I dare call it that) didn't jive with me at all. That's quite a schedule. Good luck with it!

that class sch sucks ass... i had ch 315, bch 453, gn 412, eng 331 and it was a lot...gn 412 will take a good 2-3 hours of outside class time per week, and some lab reports suck

It is the most involved lab I've taken and seriously is just a big pain in the ass. I agree with many others that the workload is not comparable to the credit given, and DEFINITELY expect to stay the whole fucking time week in and week out.

Wow, I'm really looking forward to this one, the comments just get better and better.

GN 412 sucks that's about it. I always heard the labs that had TA's got out like an hour or two before the lab was supposed to end. If you're in Dr. Gardner's class, have fun and stay an extra twenty minutes past a 3 hour and 50 minute lab.

have fun w/ those damn flys

Def not a fun lab. Too much work for a 1 credit hour course.

you learn some decent techniques in the lab and it's not very hard (all the answers to the postlabs are in the manual or something you can google). are you trying to graduate next semester? if not, i would not recommend that course load. ZO421, GN413, and BCH455 are a lot of memorization.

No, I'm not graduating next semester, I still have another year left. I'm just trying to give myself an easy Spring semester.

i hear they are switching 412 to a 2 hour class.can be a good and bad thing.good because you get your 2 hours credit worth, but bad because its not easy work and a bad grade may hurt you.

I havea TA and we definitely stay almost the entire time, and have gone over a few times. But there are two TAs and i think one lectures a lot and the other doesn't lecture as much and that's really the only difference... as far as i can tell the TAs don't grade any easier either.
