Honestly, I have always been a Herb supporter, but if it is true that he is seriously considering other jobs and "talking" to other schools -- that is discouraging...So, my question is: who are realistic candidates to take over if Herb decides to leave?Personally, I hope Herb will stay...[Edited on April 1, 2006 at 2:15 PM. Dave Odom
4/1/2006 2:15:30 PM
JARVIS

I would never watch NCSU b-ball again if Odom replaced Herb.
4/1/2006 2:17:56 PM
Some have mentioned Johnny Dawkins. If he is good, would be nice to pay Duke back for stealing Bubas
4/1/2006 2:18:52 PM
Monty Towe

Only former player remotely qualified or good enough for the job is Nate McMillan.
4/1/2006 2:26:58 PM
McMillan doesn't have a degree. It isn't happening.
4/1/2006 2:27:45 PM
Well, first you go after the big guns, whether you think its realistic or not. After all, Norm Chow wouldn't have been our offensive coordinator Rivers' first year had we not asked.Unrealistic (But I'd ask anyways):BarnesFewPearlCalipariWrightT. SmithDonovanMore Realistic:Mike MontgomerySteve LavinGreg Marshall
4/1/2006 2:29:23 PM
Lavin would be great if he could stay cleandont think its gonna go over but if he could keep us clean as a program go for that
4/1/2006 2:30:30 PM
I thought UCLA hated lavin
4/1/2006 2:32:26 PM
ahhhh random Herb babbletoo bad

See I want herb to peace out so we can have exciting basketball.ButI know our school won't get anyone better and wil most likely get someone worse.Glad I'm peacing out.
4/1/2006 2:45:14 PM
Mike Jarvis would be a good fit, and I've been saying that for years.
4/1/2006 3:13:43 PM
UCLA fans hated Lavin...however I do believe he took them to 5 straight Sweet 16's before being fired. Unrealistic Candidates: Bruce PearlJay Wright Mark Few (impossible, IMO)More Realistic, not likely:Rick Barnes John Calipari (Just becuase I don't think he stays in Conf USA)Could probably get them all: Gregg MarshallMark Turgeon (Hot candidate for many jobs, wouldn't want him, personally. Methodical offenses dont work)Karl HobbsMike Montgomery (Don't think so, but some folks tend to think its a possibility)That's a short list... I'm sure there's quite a bit more I'm missing. My "Hey, it could happen" list would probably be as follows. 1) Bruce Pearl... see if there's a way. He's always been my favorite, but we missed the boat on him2) Place a call to Jay Wright and see if there's any way possible....3) Calipari4) Rick Barnes5) Mike Montgomery6) I'd probably say my favorite on the "probable" list is Gregg Marshall. His lack of "bigtime" coaching is a concern, but there's been many great coaches who have come from very small schoolsI actually wouldn't mind Lavin, to tell you the truth. He wouldn't be my first, or 5th, but he'd be an upgrade, IMOI also wouldn't mind giving a call to Johnny Dawkins, honestly. Even though he's a Dukie, I think he'd be someone we should consider. Bubas was an NC State alum and he worked out well for Duke.... let's return the favor.
4/1/2006 3:21:15 PM
I would really have to look at Lavin's basketball product. Did his teams suffer from terminal problems that would prevent them from getting hot for 6 games at the end of a season.
4/1/2006 3:29:15 PM
I actually don't remember too much of Lavin, so I can't honestly answer that. I know he had some really good teams, but UCLA fans got to where we are now with the "If it was going to happen, it would have happened already" attitude.
4/1/2006 3:30:59 PM
Calipari wouldn't even talk to Indiana. Why would he consider coming here? I really doubt we have any chance at a BIG name coach.
4/1/2006 3:37:02 PM
I'm pretty sure that any coach replacing Herb would be his equal or worse. Not better.
4/1/2006 3:53:00 PM
Who is Winthrop's head coach? I heard that he doesnt want to leave there, but if the price is right, you never know. He runs a very fast paced game, and it looks like he's turned some athletes into good basketball players. I'd accept him...a young guy, not a proven winner in big time ball, but I'd give a guy like him a chance.
4/1/2006 4:00:25 PM
why don't you all just admit you want to play royboyball
4/1/2006 4:00:59 PM
I'm not even wanting Herb to leave at this point, but if we're gonna bring someone else in, they better not run some boring horse shit offense.

4/1/2006 4:02:23 PM
^thanksWinthrop plays good D too.
4/1/2006 4:03:17 PM
Gregg Marshall is a great coach and I definitely think if ncsu gave him 10 years that he would win conference and go past the sweet sixteen...not that he will need that long though
4/1/2006 4:12:51 PM
how in the fuck can any of you think we cant do better than Herb??? Did you also think we couldnt do better than Mike O'Cain?
4/1/2006 4:26:24 PM
We fucked up by not going after Mike Anderson from UABHis 40 minutes of hell would have fit in well at this school.
4/1/2006 4:26:50 PM
I think Anderson would have been a good hire as well.
4/1/2006 4:29:04 PM
I think Lavin would be an excellent recruiter
4/1/2006 4:58:04 PM
I have no confidence at all in us hiring the coach that we need. The market sucks right now, and I hate that we're going to have to go into the midmajor market again. This is not good...
4/1/2006 5:03:36 PM
agreed.

realistic or notwe should gun for Izzohe probably likes where he is too muchbut if I was a bigtime $ donori'd call him anywayIzzo is the only person in the nation I think can regularly beat Roy and K

jim calhounhe has funny excuses
4/1/2006 5:35:55 PM
I detest Rick Barnes and John Calipari. I'd have a hard time pulling for any team coached by those guys -- especially Calipari.
