If Student Health were to determin I've got strep throat, and prescripe some antibiotics for it, would I get some discount of the prescription price? I'm off my Blue Cross health insurance because I'm part-time now so I'm considering just riding into State and have 'em look at the frog in my throat. Just don't know if it will save me any money.

Antibiotics for strep should be dirt-cheap generics. We're talking under $10.

i hardly ever even use my insurance at student health because it ends up being so cheap, you might as well pay it

I went into student health once and told them "I have strep throat." After several hours of waiting, and the raid test coming in negative, they sent me home with nothing but a bill for the tests. They called me a few weeks later to tell me the other test came back positive. I have many horror stories with student healths waiting, screwed up billing, and other errors like them accidently cutting my toe. Having to schedule about a month in advance to see specific doctors.

When I have been treated for strep (used to get it alot as a freshman, my hometown doctor even tested me to see if I was a carrier for the disease whatever that means, although it turned out I was not) it was always when doctors or nurses or whoever saw me would say I don't know what this is, I'll just give you some antibiotics to be on the safe side. But more often I was told, this presents like strep but the rapid test is negative so I wont treat you, but if the strep gets really bad enough to show up on the rapid tests feel free to come back and waste a few more hours.

I'll go in and give them the symptoms without saying what I think it is, and let them draw their own conclusions. Hell, it might not even be strep throat. I had it once and it hurt like a motherfucker, so it might just be a sore throat. But whatever it is I hope I can just walk in and see someone, that shouldn't be too hard, right? I don't need a specialist, just someone who can look down in there and tell me what I've got.

just get Amoxicillin or Penicillin, those are the cheap generics <=$10..

it's Zpack and a few others that will run you about $25

I'll have to run with the other two - I'm allergic to Penicillin.

You need to run a culture to determine strep. You should be given antibiotics anyway. Strep antibodies attack the heart valves.

the best student health advice EVER??? request an appt with one of the PAs or Nurse Prac. If its just strep they are more than qualified and they are a lot less rushed and more caring. I had Hutchenson once and she was so awesome I asked for her the next time not even realizing she was not an MD.

I have strep throat too! The z-pack didn't really get rid of it though, and they're always booked so I can't get in for another appointment.

^And I disagree, the nurses I get are always kooks who don't know shit.
