whats the best way to do this, just turn off the modem? anyone know how long it should take?
3/29/2006 10:08:15 PM
just reset the modem takes like 30 seconds
3/29/2006 10:12:47 PM
sometimes it can take longer for their cache to reset and not give you the same ip - if you can be offline - do it overnight

3/30/2006 12:01:14 AM
not unless you leave it off for quite a bit.just swap nic cards
3/30/2006 12:22:45 AM
YOMAMA: not arguing, just wondering why changing a NIC will cause the egress link to get a new IP address?Oh and Jon... you should be spending all your extra time working on our project, not playing games! :-)

ok: I didnt want to try and explain but I will. They only reason I mentioned it was because 1 week ago I was messin around with 3 different boxes that would connect to the RR modem first. I was trying to create a dedicated firewall box. Each of the three machines I connected to the modem got a seperate IP address. I stared to notice this because I rely on that IP for other things so I took notice to that right off the bat. So just to check I kept powering down the modem and powered it back up and each machine always got the same IP address when I switched them. Not to mention I just didiit again for giggles and it worked again.Beats me why it works but it does. A long shot but it might have something to do with the MAC address. Thats a guess though. Im sure some of TWW regulars will flame me for that but ohh well./my2cents
3/30/2006 12:36:52 AM
i thought everyone through that modem would have the same ip address
3/30/2006 12:40:29 AM
ok -> are you hooking up a router first to the modem?
3/30/2006 12:43:42 AM
change mac address of the router? (if it has the capability)
3/30/2006 12:48:28 AM
dont think that works
3/30/2006 12:51:10 AM
modem-> router -> switch -> computer
3/30/2006 12:53:41 AM
then try and fake the MAC addy
3/30/2006 12:54:36 AM
i have no idea how to do that
3/30/2006 12:55:19 AM
login to your router and change it.Each one is different but it is under basic settings in mine.I have a netgear
3/30/2006 1:00:01 AM
yeah i dont want to fuck anything up
3/30/2006 1:02:55 AM
so i turned if off for 2 hours with no change
3/30/2006 1:59:29 PM
told you what do you have a Netgear or Linksys
3/30/2006 3:10:13 PM
Most routers will either have their own MAC or can spoof one of the machines you are attached to, just flop the setting from whatever it is now.
3/30/2006 3:25:17 PM
D-Link router (Dl-514)Motorolla Modem (SB4200)and then some lynksys switch
3/30/2006 3:40:21 PM
Open your router to this screen and change your MAC address to the one your PC has. Then save and power off and on your modem and router.
3/30/2006 4:14:08 PM
yeah i should have posted, thats what i did just cloned mac addy
3/30/2006 5:34:25 PM
I change the MAC on my router every time i reset it so I don't have the same IP's all the time
3/30/2006 7:55:02 PM
how would i change it again from the same machine? to clone my mac i just clicked the clone button
