My father bought an internal LiteOn DVDRW SOHW-1633S. I cannot get it to burn a DVD for anything. He is running Windows XP SP2, with an Athlon processor. His DVD burner is a slave to his Samsung DVD ROM drive. Would this be an issue causing him not to be able to burn anything? I have checked LiteOn's and LiteOnIt's website for help, but I can't find anything that could be the problem. What can I do to get this thing working? I have tried different media, msot recently Maxell DVD-R. On the face, it only shows +R, +RW, +RDL, but LiteOn's website, as well as the information packet with the drive says it will burn all the common media except for DVDRAM. Any help tonight would be greatly appreciated as I am here at my parent's house visiting.

i made this exact thread a few months ago (for the same model burner). finally gave in and bought a new burner. i only burned a couple dvds on it, i guess the dvdr lasers in these things were poorly made. you're probably SOL.

You tried it in another comptuer or in an external USB casing?

YOUR BEST BET IS TO USE AN AUTO-CONFIGURABLE DRIVER IN A SLAVE-SLAVE SETUPSOMETHING SIMILAR TO HOW YOU'D DAISY-CHAIN TWO OR MORE FLOPPY DRIVESTHERE MAY BE A SOFTWARE SOLUTION DEPENDING ON WHETHER YOUR BIOS SUPPORTS MANUAL FLASH SWITCHINGBUT DON'T COUNT ON IT, YOU MIGHT VOID YOUR WARRANTY

ALSO YOU SHOULD SET THE DIPSWITCHES TO 7-3-2-1-1-6

To update:Seotaji was right about exchanging it. According to LiteOn (who finally emailed me back a response after contacting them three weeks ago) the drive is defective and should be exchanged. After trying everything I could think of, my friend tried some things and managed to get it to burn at least +R media. It still won't burn -R, so I'm going to take it back out of Dad's computer and exchanging that POS for something better. Wonder if LiteOn could be sued for false advertising or something over a situation like this? I mean, I seriously doubt my dad would sue over something this petty, but apparently, there are a LOT of people who couldn't get it to burn -R media even though LiteOn said it could.
