...help a lamer out guys...

Figured you guys can answer this; my brother's low coolant light came on today in his 02 Ltd grand cherokee.

I squeezed the upper and lower radiator hoses and it seems like the lower one is clogged. This may be a really stupid observation; maybe that's the way these pipes are - but I've never felt a radiator pipe that felt like it has "stuff" in it.

Aren't they supposed to be free-flexing? I thought the top one was supposed to be hot, bottom cold...

Or maybe I'm just making that up - someone help me out before he drives this thing and it blows up.

Mike

PS: the truck has 95k on it now...

Okay, just wanted to make sure.

I had never felt a hose with something in it like that before....

....any other issues with the coolant light that you guys are aware of?

a lot of radiator hoses have wire coils in the if they are on the suction side. it keeps them from collapsing

^yep.

could be a number of things... i'd guess it's something simple though like low coolant or a bad sending unit. have you checked the level yet? both hoses are going to be hot/warm to the touch. even the water coming back out of the radiator is still going to be well over 100 degrees.

Yeah, I didn't realize this thing had a coolant expansion tank originally, my bad.

Stupid question, stupid answer.

I ended up filling the tank back up and it's good to go - just wanted to make sure these things weren't prone to anything.
