female cat has been constantly urinating on couch. couch has been cleaned and the cat persists with marking her territory. another male kitten came into the home recently and the female cat urinating problem has escalated. why is this happening? and what can be done?

my friend has the same problem with her cat. once they piss somewhere, they will keep pissing there unless you get the scent completely removed. this is one of the many reasons why i hate cats and hope they all burn in hell.

i don't think it has to do with the cat not being fixed cause my friend's cat didn't start doing this right after she had it fixed. we were actually joking about how the cat was doing this because she was pissed off.

i had the same problem with my cat... she was doing it mainly for attention and just kept doing it no matter how much i washed the stuff she pee'd on... i went to petsmart and in the cat section they have a couple diffrent brands of cat oder remover, which i bought, followed the directions, and now she doen't pee anywhere but her litter box.... hopefully it'll work w/ your cat!

our older cat started doing that when we moved to florida. i beleive it is a matter of anxiety and the need for attention. she went to a new place and had no one upstairs to keep her company. we also "inherrited" another cat that hang out downstairs.

it probalby wont stop (though our cat has gotten somewhat better). making sure their litter is spotless seems to help.

^i think i agree. my cat felt the need to pee on some of my clothes when i first moved into my apartment. i just thought it was because he was moved in with a dog and there was new territory. it probably happened 2 times or so and he doesn't do it now. i would agree though that cleaning the litter box regularly and often does help. good luck.

1st: How old is the cat? If she's old, it may just be a bladder control problem. Really old cats lose control of their bladder function.

2nd: Has she had any injuries to her tail or lower lower back? Sometimes if the nerves are damaged in the lower spine/tail they can cause bladder control problems as well. I had a cat who had her tail run over, and we had to amputate. Afterwards she had to be an outside only cat because she had lost all bladder control.

3rd: Has she been fixed? If not, this is probably the problem. Once you have her fixed, she'll lose the hormones telling her to spray and mark territory.... usually.

4th: She may have systitis (spelling?). It's a bladder disease that cats can get. If they get it they usually have it for life. Something to do with the PH of the urine causes crystals to form in the bladder, causing a shitton of pain and discomfort, not to mention a complete lack of bladder control. It's basically like it's so painful for the cat to pee, they try and hard and as hard as they can not to pee, and occasionally the bladder gets soo full, some comes out. If you see your cat straining to pee, notice blood in the urine, or suspect that all the other options aren't it.. take her to the vet and get her checked. It's completely treatable.. you've just gotta get medicated cat food for her for the rest of her life. My cat had this happen to him.. and the food is really cheap, so don't worry, it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

My cats started urinating to mark their territory and one of them had crystals in his urine until we switched their food. After the urine crystal problem was fixed, we still had some problems with territorial urinating because they are both males and we had one before we had the other (yes, they are both fixed). My husband and I bought this really great enzymatic cleaner (forgot the name) at Cozy Cat on Lynn Rd. It is slightly more expensive than the cleaners at PetsMart, but it is 100% money back guaranteed. Ever since we started using that cleaner on their urine spots, they have, to our knowledge, stopped the territorial pissing.

try moving the litter box

definitely SPAY that cat!

there are sprays with pheremones in them that will help calm the cat.

dont cover up the scent, get rid of it, baking soda and vodka works, steam clean it.

Did you buy the couch used? Maybe another cat had pissed on it before and your cat smelled the remnance?

Make sure she's not sick with a bladder infection or something.

Also, don't hit her or anything because you will just make her mad and teach her to be more careful about being caught pissing on the couch and she may start pissing elsewhere (read - on the carpet or on something more expensive)


Get her fixed. Occasionally, the territorial thing can be solved by having your female cat spayed. Male cats are known to be more territorial and the neutering generally helps them with the territory issue. It MAY help your female cat though and even if it doesn't, she still needs to be fixed.

Sorry to bear the bad news, but no matter how many times you wash the couch and no matter what you wash it with, the scent is still going to be in your couch enough for her to smell it. (That's why I asked about if it was a used couch when you got it.) The trick is going to be to get her to ignore it. Chances are, if you got a new couch, you would probably have a better chance of keeping her from peeing on it, but I doubt you want to invest in something like that with the chance that she may still pee on it.

ok, so our cat used to do this too. she's fixed so that can't be the only problem, but after she got fixed randomly pissing got very much less frequent. I researched it some and we have been making sure their litter box gets cleaned every other day or so and give them lots of attention. If you are having to leave the cat for long periods of time, that would probably be the main cause of the peeing. What I read about it was its mostly for attention. Whatever you do, don't "punish" the cat for it after it has been done, apparantly that makes it worse.

Actually I really think it has more to do with some changes that have gone on in the house that are causing her more anxiety than usual. It could be correlated with the new kitten or maybe less attention from you or what not. Cats come into our animal hospital a lot with this problem. Surprisingly they are usually perscribed a mild dosage of xanax or prozac. A lot of times it is just nervous urinating and these meds either help to decrease the occurance of stop it completely. The drugs aren't very expensive especially xanax because they'll give you a perscrip. for a generic brand. Go to your vet and talk to him about this, it will definatley help!
