I have had (diagnosed) ADD my whole life, and have never been able to concentrate well on my work. Even if I literally have nothing else to do, I cannot focus on homework. This has been getting worse over the last few months, I don't know if it is senioritis or my ADD is worse than before, but it is severely affecting my grades. What does it take to get a legit prescription to Adderall? And is it possible to do it at the student healt center, or would I need to see my family doctor?

it's takes a psychiatristand they will want to charge you an arm and a leg for tests before they perscribe meds

If you have a good relationship with your GP, and can bring in medical records (or get them transferred there) with the diagnosis (and preferably, the doctor's notes on your dx), you should be able to get a script from your GP.I also wouldn't waste your time at the Student Health CenterBtw, I don't suggest going in and asking for adderall, unless your reasoning for asking for it is that you've been on it before, and prefer it. Otherwise, be open to what the doctor suggests...but also don't get herded into taking the newest, "best" ADHD med. Do your research on the meds before you go in.Be prepared to be re-evaluated for ADHD/ADD. Who's your insurance provider?]

what the hell are you people talking about? it's WAY easier than all that. go to your doctor, tell them what you posted in this thread, and any one worth a damn will give you a prescription. you'll have to go in for one or two followup visits to ensure no side effects, but that's it. if you need a doctor, pm me and i'll give you the name of mine.
3/20/2006 2:26:09 PM
Yeah, just go to a primary-care doc.Let me say this again: THERE ARE NO TESTS THAT CAN DIAGNOSE ADD. It is just a clinical diagnosis.
3/20/2006 2:28:48 PM
What do you think a clinical diagnosis is?

3/20/2006 3:21:17 PM
yeah, do you really think everyone and their brother would have a prescription if there were some kind of test? the test for ADD is as follows: Does this speed make you motivated to get off your ass? YES! ok.
3/20/2006 3:26:05 PM
"what the hell are you people talking about? it's WAY easier than all that."That's the damn truth. My brother got "diagnosed" with ADD because he's had trouble concentrating. He got an Rx for adderall after his first office visit with his new doctor and filling out a questionnaire ("Do you get bored in engineering classes?")[Edited on March 20, 2006 at 3:28 PM. 3/20/2006 3:28:28 PM
being lazy is not ADD
3/20/2006 3:47:20 PM
Doctors don't know that.

yep, any general practitioner can prescribe itor a psychiatristor a psychologist
3/20/2006 7:32:35 PM
^one of those two "psychs" can't prescribe medicine i thought. i thought that was the difference between them.-ZiP!-
3/20/2006 7:36:41 PM
According to the test I took, those are the three options
3/20/2006 7:37:32 PM
i don't think a psychologist canand I have a case of Jealousy against Zip. he lives the NY life I've only dreamt about[Edited on March 20, 2006 at 7:39 PM. Reason : n]
3/20/2006 7:37:43 PM
"Psychologists" aren't allowed to prescribe medications. All they could do is refer you to a doctor who can.Psychiatrists are MDs, meaning they have full prescription-writing capabilities.
3/20/2006 7:39:15 PM
psychiatrists are doctors with M.D. degrees that can therefore prescribe medicinespschologists usually don't have M.D. degrees and do not
3/20/2006 7:40:49 PM
regular doctors giving meds to fix psychological problems seems unethical
3/20/2006 7:57:50 PM
I wouldn't consider it psychological.
3/20/2006 8:01:28 PM
yeah, cause you knowmajoring in Marketing totally gives you the qualifications to make that judgement
3/20/2006 8:04:27 PM
and you're the one that said it takes a psychiatrist to prescribe. It's an inbalance of chemicals in the brain - that not psychological.. thats physical.
3/20/2006 8:10:48 PM
3/20/2006 8:11:36 PM
^^yeah, i know what i saidi would think that a regular doctor "shouldn't" be able to prescribe those medsapparently, i was mistakenbut it's still clear that you don't know jack about what you're talking aboutyou know why, cause NO ONE REALLY DOESthat's why psychiatry comes off as awfully hokie sometimesbut anything that involves the mind is basically thought of as in the sphere of psychology[Edited on March 20, 2006 at 8:14 PM. NO PILLS!
3/20/2006 8:24:19 PM
I am sick of this "adult ADD" and Adderall bullshit.WE ALL HAVE ADHD. SOME OF US ARE SMART ENOUGH TO DEVELOP COPING SKILLS.
3/20/2006 8:28:30 PM
3/20/2006 8:29:44 PM
you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about
3/20/2006 8:29:47 PM
I DON'T CARE. I AM ANGRY.
3/20/2006 8:31:54 PM
sounds like you have "issues"
3/20/2006 8:33:03 PM
Don't we all?
3/20/2006 8:33:27 PM
no, not everyone
3/20/2006 8:33:54 PM
3/20/2006 8:36:01 PM
Damn woman, what is your problem? So you don't like people with ADD, whatever, I don't like people with cancer. Maybe you can simply "WRITE IT DOWN. MAKE A FUCKING TO-DO LIST, YOU FUCKING MORONS." and everything is alright. I can't, and I am sorry if that upsets you. A to-do list helps me remember due dates, which I don't have a problem with anyway. I have a problem with focusing. But maybe you are right, and everyone's mind works the exact same way. I guess you are just more dedicated and smarter than I am. Too bad. Luckily there is a pill to help me and my weakness.Sorry that upsets you so...

3/20/2006 8:52:07 PM
gah i gotta find a doctor around chapel hill/durham and get a new addy prescription
3/20/2006 8:53:38 PM
You can get a prescription from a GP as long as you have taken the ADD test
3/20/2006 9:13:33 PM
the "add test" is some bullshit they use to trick people with money/insurance.
3/20/2006 9:14:32 PM
^^^^I tell you what. You keep spewing ad hominem BS, and convince yourself that you have a fucking clue. Then, after 20-30 years, when it's obvious that everything I've said and warned is justifiable and true, you can lick my balls. Deal?"ADD test"ahahahahahaha, right.[Edited on March 20, 2006 at 9:15 PM. Reason : ][Edited on March 20, 2006 at 9:22 PM. I agree with everything BridgetSPK and hempster have said. The whole ADD thing is just an excuse for misbehaving kids or those who can't study. I'm sure that drugs do calm people down and help them to concentrate but I never have believed in the whole ADD thing. Especially in younger kids its just an excuse for crappy parenting and not disciplining your child.
3/20/2006 9:40:28 PM
and you are ignorant then
3/20/2006 9:48:12 PM
joe17669, would you agree that ADD/ADHD is inappropriately and excessively diagnosed though?[Edited on March 20, 2006 at 9:59 PM. Reason : I still don't think I got "inappropriately" right...]
