did state fans call for his head or just drink more?

3/18/2006 7:25:18 PM
When sendek does anything close to what jimmy v did, then he can talk shit
3/18/2006 7:29:45 PM
I'm gonna laugh when unc loses to GM or WSU
3/18/2006 7:29:48 PM
im gonna laugh too, cause that means they fucking blew it. durr

The Waves of Pepperdine vs. The Free Throw Defense
3/18/2006 7:32:43 PM
Jimmy V "pissed it away" becuase his star player got hurt
3/18/2006 7:33:48 PM
I'm not saying sendek is going to win a national championship, or that valvano was a shitty coach. If you responded as such, then you're only portraying your own thoughts on the current coach into this thread.my question was meant to ask whether or not state fans were as critical back then of coaches not living up to expectations as they are now. at the time we entered the ACC tournament, valvano was an unproven coach that had lost 10 games in a season where we were expected to do a lot better. What happened after that is history and to be discussed in a different thread than this one.
3/18/2006 7:39:51 PM
i'd imagine (or at least hope) that the fans were a lil forgiving since he lost the best player for almost the entire regular season
3/18/2006 7:43:44 PM
but were they understanding of that or were they calling for his head before the tourney?
3/18/2006 7:45:38 PM
We were favored by many to win the ACC that year. We were awesome before Whittenburg went down, and we were awesome after he came back. His first game back was the first game of the ACC tournament...and we all know how it went after that. Apples to oranges. .

3/18/2006 7:54:56 PM
Herb has taken some head.
3/18/2006 7:55:47 PM
Yeah, but name a coach that hasnt
3/18/2006 7:56:36 PM
Apples and Oranges.I hate when people try to compare coaches from different eras with completely different situations...(this goes both ways PackBacker, I'm not aiming this at you). There are not a lot of 32-year old head coaches that could do a good job in the situation Herb Sendek was put in here at NC State. I'll leave it at that.
3/18/2006 8:11:26 PM
Valvano had charisma and a personality.
3/18/2006 8:11:36 PM
^ I really think a lot of the reason Herb has taken heat is becuase he's not won big quickly like other greats have... but couple that with a personality that is completely dry. Now the psychopathic "Herb can do no wrong" posters on this board are going to come in with some stupid argument about "OMF HERB DOESNT WEAR RED SHOES" or something similarly as stupid.... and just becuase you have a personality doesn't mean you're adored... but I think it's at least something that helps a fanbase relate to you.Even if V hadn't won quickly here like he did, I don't think he would have been treated like Herb. V wasn't a salesman like Amato... he was just a magnificent person to be around. The alumni loved him.... I don't think Herb has that advantage[Edited on March 18, 2006 at 8:18 PM. Reason : ]

For the record: V was in the frickin' mob and his scandals killed our program for years. Herb hasnt he ballsack or gumption to do something like that for a good reason maybe? Also it seemed like it was easier to make a "lucky run in the tourney" and win it all back then given the competition and lack of hype/officiating fiascos/etc. When was the last time a cinderella really went all the way?[Edited on March 18, 2006 at 8:19 PM. Reason : tori spleeling][Edited on March 18, 2006 at 8:19 PM. Reason : same][Edited on March 18, 2006 at 8:20 PM. Reason : alcohol]
3/18/2006 8:18:47 PM
V was not in the mobV's "scandals" aren't what killed this program. Peter Golenboch and NandO killed this program[Edited on March 18, 2006 at 8:20 PM. Reason : quoted scandals]
3/18/2006 8:19:40 PM
P & N were victims maaaan! (yes you are right about that also)
3/18/2006 8:20:49 PM
3/18/2006 8:23:39 PM
Ditto, Dave... At least we may very well have a lock on the greatest cinderella story of all time despite what becomes of us vs. the UNC/DUKE goliaths in years to come.... (but damn is sure would be nice to turn the tables sooner or later....)
3/18/2006 8:26:00 PM
You lost me at
3/18/2006 8:41:48 PM
V was in the mob?
3/18/2006 8:42:48 PM
Yeah, he was in a mob of fans when he won the fucking national championship
3/18/2006 8:43:59 PM
No, I'm serious....Are you saying he was in the mob? I have honestly never heard that and it sounds like you were ridiculing the fact that I said he wasn't in the mob... So confused
3/18/2006 8:44:55 PM
everyone with black hair and a last name ending in a vowel was in the mob
3/18/2006 8:45:36 PM
^^reading? I was questioning the assertion that he was in the mob, as well. The noob made that statement.[Edited on March 18, 2006 at 8:46 PM. Reason : sdfsdf]
3/18/2006 8:45:47 PM
ah.. gotcha. I thought you were ridiculing the fact that I said V wasn't in the mob. That would have been news to me
3/18/2006 8:46:51 PM
Its a joke amongst some ppl that we was in the mob, but surely it is nothing more than that. Not to be taken seriously like so many other posts here apparently.... Happy?
3/18/2006 8:47:50 PM
yeah, Jimmy V was Tony Soprano's second cousin and actually murdered because he won a game he took money to throw. That whole cancer thing was a cover-up.
3/18/2006 8:52:08 PM
LOL, love it.... and the golf tourney is really raising funds for mob-related importing and sopranos merchandise marketing schemes
3/18/2006 8:54:40 PM
That's how he launders the mob money
3/18/2006 8:55:27 PM
3/18/2006 8:57:36 PM
And not all of the alumni loved him....back when all the turmoil was going on, a lot of Wolfpack faithful were pissed off at V. However, time has healed a lot of wounds, especially the way V has been revered in the basketball community...his perception among Wolfpack fans has gotten a lot better and seems to be at an immortal status.
3/18/2006 8:59:07 PM
if he hadn't died so quickly after the scandal occurred, time probably wouldn't have healed any of those wounds. He'd probably have pulled a Rick Pitino and gone to coach Wake Forest into history.
3/18/2006 9:01:46 PM
He wasn't perfect... and you're pretty dead on with the post. Two things I'll add. - I agree about the AD thing- When V recruited sketchy athletes, the ACC Admission standards were nearly nonexistent and from what I understand (feel free to prove me wrong, I just haven't heard of it), V never really broke rules to get these players in. I realize they were dumbasses and he brought it upon himself, but all I'm saying is it was no grounds for a death sentence looming from the NCAA. The ACC actually changed their admission standards after the V fiasco The medias perception of V was ultimately his downfall. Granted, I'll agree that he gave them ammo. Still, completely undeserving of the way he was treated.
