Sendek's statement by: Pat Forde

posted: Friday, March 17, 2006

DALLAS -- The most popular pastime in Raleigh this March has been bashing Herb Sendek. A four-game losing streak entering the NCAA Tournament -- including two losses to ACC last-place team Wake Forest -- was all the ammo some critics needed.

Ten seasons of Sendek was enough for them. One Raleigh News & Observer columnist flat called for Herb to go, and another opined this week that the administration must decide now whether keeping Sendek is worth it.

The Keep Sendek Movement (if there is one) got some important ammunition Friday night: a Cameron Bennerman three-pointer that broke a tie game with 32 seconds left and lifted the 10th-seeded Wolfpack to a mild upset of No. 7 California, 58-52.

somebody post the rest of it...

"That statement, that column -- whatever it was -- was foolish," guard Tony Bethel said. "We all love him, and he's a big influence in our lives."

Asked about the potential firing of Sendek, Bennerman was fairly blunt: "It's not gonna happen."

Probably not now. Even a fifth straight loss to end the season might not have spelled doom for Sendek, who would be an expensive buyout and who is coming off an unexpected Sweet Sixteen run last season.

Living between Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams is a tough way to make a living, especially when your fan base remembers State's 1974 and '83 national titles like they happened yesterday. But athletic director Lee Fowler had staunchly stood by Sendek for years now, and certainly doesn't seem predisposed to letting fans or media make his personnel decisions for him.

For his part, Sendek responded to questions about his job status and the external criticism with characteristic understatement and a complete lack of emotion. This is one subject that brings out Herb's inner Vulcan.

Asked whether he feels any sense of vindication with the win or anger at his critics, Sendek said, "I don't have either of those [emotions]."

He does have a Round of 32 berth that few foresaw. Even Sendek's toughest critics must credit him with that much. "

That says it all. A team on tobacco road in year 8 (last year) being unexpected to win two lousy games in the tournament. That's all the evidence needed. but yea, asking the players about it is creating a dsitraction if you ask me. Sendek can handle himself no doubt, but they need to quit hammering Bennerman about it.

It was more unexpected because we were playing UConn, not because it was a 2nd game.

Granted, it was also the first-time we advanced that far in awhile...
