it just started for no reason that i can discern...it's a 15" hp 1502 (nothing special, i use it as my television screen while i work on the computer)...but now when i turn it on, the power light flashes on and off regularly and the image from the computer flickers on and off (also regularly)...any ideas as to what might be causing it?

sounds like the backlight is on its way out...is that thing under warranty still?

i doubt it, it's probably a year and a half old...the backlight, is it a long tube, looks kinda like a fluorescent light? i've taken apart a laptop before and found something like that...are they easily replaceable?

It depends on the monitor, but usually. They're also usually fairly inexpensive (like 5-30 bucks depending on the brand.)

well...$30 isn't too bad to have my lcd back up and running...what do i look for in replacing it? i checked out ebay (briefly), but i didn't find any backlights specifically for the monitor...if i pull the lcd apart, i take it the backlight will have a part number on it (just checking before i actually dismember it)

Maybe, it'd be nice if it did wouldn't it? You can check at places that sell lcd monitors like office depot etc. and they could possibly look up what lamp you need. Also, you can get the replacements direct from the manufacturer. Once you have a part number from either of those sources, you should be able to shop around more effectively though.

nevermind, the thing's under warranty until early 2008 for some reason...rock on hp

that's not a shabby warranty for an lcd. last one I had didn't cover the backlights for the screen!

and in my experience, hp is really good about this stuff...i had a 300gb sata drive go bad in the first month of owning the computer and they sent me a replacement OVERNIGHT, along with a prepaid fedex sticker so i could put the old drive back in the box and return it free of charge...they said they were doing the same thing with monitor...i mentioned that i thought it was the backlight and they said that it didn't matter what was wrong with it (then again, this came from a business server package, so that might be why)

yeah maybe. I mean even when it's not covered it's almost a nothing part.
