As SG elections approach, I wanted to urge everyone to objectively compare the platforms of the student body president candidates. To me, Will Quick's plan of action is the most comprehensive and I know he has the ability to make execute. On a personal note, Will's desire to selflessly serve and his ability to relate to all students continually impresses me.http://willquick.comPlatform: http://www.willquick.com/platform/Vote on March 27th and 28th (http://vote.ncsu.edu)[Edited on March 15, 2006 at 1:48 PM. I think a lot of TWW has unfairly characterized Will (for whatever reason). This is an opportunity to take 2-3 minutes to see what his plans are.http://www.willquick.comNo prob Alan, you're entitled to your opinion.[Edited on March 15, 2006 at 2:06 PM. Reason : ]

Its nice that this guy is selfless and all, but wouldn't a thread one the student body president elections be better than one on a specific person. I mean if we get like 6 threads in the soap box each on individuals, then comparison discussion is going to be more difficult. On his specific platform. I think its nice that hes against the NPO… since practically every student is, its good that he represents them. But I have a hard time imagining any SBP being pro NPO… so it doesn’t really differentiate him.“I promise to force the university to address these issues and to call for the university to find other ways of balancing its budgets rather than taxing students.”He wants less tuition hikes, and to get rid of certain fees. There is a cost of doing business, this might be an unfortunate reality, but you can’t call for the university to stop taking in money in these ways and tell “force the university” to figure out the rest. “Encourage the university to keep major classes in the buildings associated with their College.”For some reason I really like this one. Creating a community feel with individual attention and a personal setting in colleges seems like it would be a nice thing.“Enforce the one test by the drop deadline rule so that students have a good idea of how hard a class will be while they still have time to remove themselves without penalty.”I like this one too. I had my first graded assignment in a class today and March is way too late to change things if things go badly. “Increase the amount of student parking ? Advocate a New parking deck? Push the University to look into purchasing parking lots off of Hillsborough that are currently privately owned pay lots.”Again he is asking the university to spend more money while taking in less money… you just can’t have it both ways. Same goes for the new library security guard. And adding a C-store and researching solar energy for dorms.Overall, its nice that he’s pro students, that he wants the university to spend more on us, that he wants to university to take less money from us, he’s pro sports, and pro team work. But he seems like a chief follower among followers. He did have some interesting ideas, not all of which I listed. But you need backing to create change, and this includes financial backing. If he’d narrow down some his list of practical changes that he is pushing for, and also push for looking into reasonable increases of tuition to make these possible then maybe he’d seem like a leader. Sometimes its worth paying extra to have things done right. He could fund some of his projects by moving money around, but if the university is taking in less and paying more, any program he has will happen at the expense of other programs. I like his community-feel ideas, with the colleges having classes in their departments, his study group plans, and continuing traditions. I know all students wish they had more money, but if he could run on a platform of sensible increases to pay for a quality community, I think he’d get my vote.

Supplanter, thanks for spending the time to read over the platform. Will's mention of the NPO isn't just to state his position in opposition to it (you're absolutely right - I couldn't envision a SBP candidate in favor of it). Will's plan to create a Raleigh Coalition of Universities is an example of a concrete way the students in the Raleigh area can work on issues like the NPO (strength in numbers)His list is comprehensive because he knows he'll be able to effectively delegate tasks and get the job done as opposed to trying to tackle that list alone.

If he has those skills, then getting a lot done is better than getting a little done. Sometimes however, one person having skills isn’t enough, when you are working in a bureaucracy with a lot of people, some of whom are opposed to you, and where there are others that are just apathetic. But a smaller, more practical list, seems more likely to be achieved. Its better to fully feed a few men, than half feed a dozen and watch them all starve. Some of his ideas seemed to create a stronger sense of community, so if I were going to narrow down the list, thats what I'd go with.^^That still doesn't address the issue of him calling for alot more to be done on less money. I think calling for a few specific targeted things getting done, with reasonable increases tuition or fees would result in alot more actual change. If it was all oriented around a related goal, like community-feel, then successes would stack. But if all he achieves is unrelated things like getting a guard posted at the library, and getting 1 fee removed from distance education people, then it will feel less successful. He’s trying to be the president over a student government body, not of a nation, there’s no reason to over reach and try to touch on everything. I'm not trying to convience people that his platform is bad and that they shouldn't vote for him, instead I'm hoping his party will listen to a concerned voter and consider changing their platform somewhat. Its not the national level where any change counts as a weakness, or as a flip flopper... a change for the better might be an improvement that people could see and latch on to when voting.[Edited on March 15, 2006 at 2:34 PM. Now for on topic. The ones I see problems with:
3/15/2006 2:44:19 PM
Assigning specific spots would make it difficult to take in more money by overselling spots. Every time I see a specific event going on notifying the people involved that they will be able to park in the DC deck I cringe. But parking is a big project to take on with limited space and funds in such a sprawling university with such a massive number of students and faculty. I don’t see any SBP being able to devote the effort to get a serious change in this area and still do anything else during their term.Getting a HA room opened up for study groups, focus on planning so that college classes happen in their specific buildings, the community stuff seems like it could be a real difference people could feel.If someone with delegating powers could take on parking at this campus it would be a huge change that everyone would feel. But its too big an issue to be 1 on a list of 100 things to do, and its too difficult to change to be worth spending all your effort on. And there is no way, seriously no way at all, to have a dramatic impact on parking while making the university take in less money.

does anyone have links to the sites of the other people who are running, i'd like to read their platforms too.

"Raleigh Coalition of Universities"...wasn't that on Lock Whiteside's platform last year? And the City Council and lobbying planks are...well...cute...---For Supplanter's question, I think all but 3 of the Student Body President candidates have dropped out. So your choices will be:Will Quickhttp://www.willquick.com/Will Langleyhttp://www.votelangley.com/Cody Williamshttp://cody.wolfpacklife.com/[Edited on March 15, 2006 at 9:13 PM. Reason : ---]

Haven't read all the things, but after reading Will Quick's position on the NPO, it reminds me of the clones running for president in futurama
3/15/2006 9:26:18 PM
Just read Cody's platform section. I like how he focused largely on 1 issue... that being hillsborough street. The create unity idea bothers me a little, but I think thats because hes not saying what he means. Unity between the executive, the judicial, and legislative branches would be a bad thing for checks and balances. But from the context, I gather that he seems to actually mean remove enough hostility to atleast get the groups to speak to each other."Fill University Standing Committee Student Seats"Thats great if you can get people interested in it. But this seems like "I'm pro good things." Its a nice idea to have alot of interested people in student government, but if people just aren't interested, then don't waste your time their. And he mentions the Board of Trustees, so he seems to have a decent idea of what the job entails and like he will be responsible. So far he seems to be my favorite candidate. If quick was so scattered among causes then he might be better, but Cody seems to have more focus with his Hillsborough plans.
3/15/2006 9:43:17 PM
I think theyre all going to be useless. However I am definately voting for Will Langley right now. Why?The one campaign promise I think he deliver on is the only good one I see anyone making.GETTING US A STUDENT DISCOUNT AT BOJANGLES
3/15/2006 9:45:51 PM
Okay, I thought Langely would also require serious thought, but it did not.He promises not to be a tool. Hes going to try to get student special at bojangles. I get that those are funny things to say, but they also comprise like a fourth of his platform.Hes pro-sports & traditions. He wants to make parking cheaper, books cheaper, food cheaper. Most of them seem like trying to be your buddy issues. He'll go after "parking nazis" & "paul cousins." His entire platform really does seem like:"It's time someone had the courage to stand up and say: I'magainst those things that everybody hates!"Quick has good ideas and bad ideas, but mostly alot of ideas... too much to get done.Langley is against those things everybody hates. Both those guys want the university to take less money from students, and spend more money on students.Cody seemed best of all 3. A smaller more reasonable platform. Some of the things weren't great, but most of it was good. He will get my vote unless I encountered more material or changes on stances. But even if I don’t see more material or changes, I still think I’ll be better informed than most voters.
3/15/2006 9:51:33 PM
^^ Because, you know...Bojangles really struggles to get student business, so they need to offer a discount...oh wait.Eh, forget it. I'm just bitter that DC doesn't have a Bojangles. Or a cookout. Or sweet tea. [Edited on March 15, 2006 at 9:54 PM. Reason : add]

^^um, we call it soda up North as well. you're thinking of the midwest, there, pal.
3/16/2006 12:12:47 AM
Mt Airy has an unusually high number of people who call it "pop" compared to the rest of NC. I think its more of a crossover from as a midwestern thing rather than a Yankee thing, b/c mayberry isn't known for its fondness of yankees.

3/16/2006 1:15:33 PM
ok, so they make promises about reducing the amount of money students spend on school. i like to see an elaborate plan on how they're going to do that. i don't think it's possible to have students pay less while the school spends more. i just don't see where the extra money is coming. the bojangles thing i can see happening, but books, tuition, parking, etc. is far fetched.
