i get mad irritation when i shave my neck, redness and bumps. i've been using an electric rotary razor for a few weeks now, and that's helped, but i still get it in the sensitive areas (the adam's apple and the softer parts to the left and right)any advice as to what i could do to minimize/stop this? it's not even that it irritates me all that much, it just looks bad when such a beautiful face is plagued with a neck that hates razors lotion, aftershave, ritual dance, etc...whatever works for you, just help me pleeease
3/15/2006 1:03:13 AM
did you just start shavingif not, have you always had this problemif not, did you recently change razors, lotion, etc?
3/15/2006 1:05:02 AM
slow, long strokes with a sharp Mach3 in an upward motionhaven't suffered from razor burn since I adopted this method...and my skin is sensitive as fuck
3/15/2006 1:05:09 AM
learned this from queer eye for a straight guyUsing a Mach 3, on the first stroke go with the hair, so shave from your chin down to your adam's apple. On the second stroke, go against the grain in the opposite way. I've never had razor burn since then.
3/15/2006 1:12:41 AM
i don't have very sensitive skin i guessi've never had razor burn really, and i just shave all willy-nilly with my mach 3
3/15/2006 1:14:28 AM
Get a badger hair brush and some shaving soap. I can go against the grain first stroke with my Extreme3 no problem
3/15/2006 1:23:23 AM
No, I've been shaving for years...I've always used a Mach3 but I could never shave against the grain on my neck. My face is fine, no irritation whatsoever, but the minute I try to go against the grain on my neck my skin explodes. Going with the grain kept the irritation low or non-existant, but it left a lot of hair unshaven, not close at all. My girlfriend got me a Norelco electric, and that gets a LOT closer on my neck, but I get irritation when I try to scrape it against the grain. I was just wondering if using lotion and/or aftershave or something else each time would gradually reduce any irritation...or if any of you had the same problem and had any other tricks
3/15/2006 1:27:07 AM
get some nads
3/15/2006 1:28:43 AM
- try to avoid shaving immediately after waking up.- shave after a shower (hairs soften up).. if you can't do that, use a hot towel and place it on your face.- use decent shaving gel, let it sit before shaving.- i don't shave against the grain, avoid doing it if you don't have to.- sharp blades are key, change them early and often.- when you are finished, rinse with COLD water. it helps close pores and can help minimize irritation.

i have very sensitive skin, and i shave correctly, but i still get burned sometimes.
3/15/2006 2:06:02 AM
decrease the # of blades, FUCK the fusion
3/15/2006 2:20:49 AM
shave in the shower with sharp razor (measued in ages of one week or two, not months)wash face first, with some sort of scrub/exfoliator first. this will help a bunchshave with the grain first, then against if you need to. this is where the sharp blade really helps
3/15/2006 2:32:48 AM
i want a straight razor
3/15/2006 2:36:14 AM
ummmmm.....learn how to fucking shaveare you 12?
3/15/2006 2:56:40 AM
is the problem not your razor is pulling hairs? does it not hurt? thats why you get irritation. use a the clippers edge that some electic razors come with (or just clippers) you cant get a clean shave, but you can get close. make sure you are cutting hair, not pulling it out. its the only option for people with sensitive skin.[Edited on March 15, 2006 at 6:52 AM. I had this problem when i first started shaving, and ever since then i just use the little clipper beard trimmer thingy on my neck...doesnt give a skin-close shave of course but its always been passable enough to never have problems at my jobs where grooming standards were enforced
3/15/2006 7:37:23 AM
haha, the fusion made my face bleed the first time...

My boyfriend was doing all that was mentioned above but still had a problem... I found American Crew's shave oil, he tried it and he doesnt have a problem anymore. The bottle seems a lil pricey but it lasts a long time.

3/15/2006 9:35:50 AM

3/15/2006 9:36:36 AM
Bic one bladeI only have one face, I don't see the need for any more than one blade.Oh, and I shave in the shower, that way I don't have to put on shaving cream.
3/15/2006 9:40:12 AM
Yeah, but unkempt, raggedy-ass beards all down the front of your neck? I don't think so.The only jobs I've seen that allowed this kind of thing were making sammiches at Sadlack's and at head shops.
3/15/2006 9:43:07 AM
head shops, eh?what kinda bitches work in there

avoid shaving immediately after waking up.shave after a shower or washing or face.shave oil or tea tree oil if you can stand the smell.badger hair brush and some shaving soap.sharp blades are key, change them early and often.
3/15/2006 9:54:19 AM
I SUGGEST YOU STOP BEING A PUSSY AND QUIT WHINING ABOUT RAZOR BURN.....TRY SHAVING YOUR CHEST EVERY DAY AND HITTING A NIPPLE....NOW THAT SHIT IS PAINFUL
3/15/2006 10:03:59 AM
does he not use any aftershave?
3/15/2006 10:05:36 AM
Step One ($3)Step Two ($15)Step Three ($12)Step Four ($15)Worth every penny for that collection of shaving things, I never get razor burn anymore and I have super sensitive skin.
3/15/2006 10:15:25 AM
As to the not shaving thing, there are also a decent number of companies with "no beards" or "no facial hair" rules. Like it or not, it's the way things are.
3/15/2006 10:30:57 AM
Use this.
3/15/2006 11:08:47 AM
I appreciate all the advice...the idea though is to continue using the electric razor. It gets--for all intents and purposes--as close as a regular razor and does a helluva better job on my neck. I like it because I dont need shaving cream or anything and it works best on a dry face...i.e. wake up, run the thing around my face for a minute, and I'm done. But obviously my neck is sensitive, and I'll get razor burn no matter what method I use to shave it. I'm looking for a pre- or post-shaving treatment here, not the actual shaving method itself. The oils and whatnot some of you have mentioned are the kind of thing I'm looking for. I don't mind the redness that results from shaving friction, the irritation doesn't bother me and it goes away in a few minutes. The thing that bothers me is the red bumps that remain in certain areas, almost like a type of acne or something, though it's not. I was thinking an aftershave might do the trick, because maybe that's caused by bacteria getting in my pores and the alcohol would kill it off...or maybe something witchhazel-based to close the pores and kill bacteria. That's probably what I'm going to try first...after all isn't that what aftershave is for?
3/15/2006 12:55:14 PM
you can either have a close shave that cuts off those hairs below the skin so they can get all red and bumpy like that, or you can not have the bumps by not shaving so damn close, but experience has taught me that ya can't have both.
3/15/2006 1:40:39 PM
^^^ ROTFL I haven't seen a pic that funny in ages
3/15/2006 1:49:22 PM
the rest of that sentence was "or after a shower." Showers soften your face/hair. Makes it easier to cut.Try the Mach 14.
3/15/2006 2:08:49 PM
Get that stuff I had the picture of in my post. It's called Code Blue aftershave by Brave Soldier. You'll have to order it online because I haven't found a place around here to get it, but I know target.com sells it. It is freaking miracle elixir for your skin. I promise.

Lab Series Razor Burn Relief is really good. You can get it at most fragrance counters. It is fragrance free but carried under Aramis so it is at the fragrance counter. They have a complete line of men's skin care. Very Very good in my opinion. I work for the company so I guess I'm a little partial. If you would like some samples of the products let me know and I will hook you up!http://www.labseries.com
3/15/2006 2:56:32 PM
^^ cool, maybe i'll start with that^ sure, i'd like to try a sample
3/15/2006 3:52:28 PM
cold water, freezing cold
3/15/2006 4:02:24 PM
Electric razors make my face break out really bad...I use a mach3 turbo and bar soap (instead of shaving cream) I have had no problems since. It just takes longer with soap though because you have to rinse it off a couple times before you can get a good lather but it does a better job
3/15/2006 7:18:28 PM
the reason you don't shave right after waking up is because your face is usually swollen first thing in the morning from blood. when you wake up and have been moving around for a few minutes the blood starts circulating normal again. if you do shave right after waking up you will most likely end up with a not so close shave (a 5 o'clock shadow about noon kinda thing)I've been using this nivna for men aftershave. it's really nice and helps with razor burn and ingrown hairs. i'm cursed with sensitive skin and very coarse facial hair.
3/15/2006 9:27:34 PM
also try using aloe as an aftershave...ever better if it's vitamin E fortified
3/15/2006 10:11:45 PM
^^that's the most interesting thing I've learned all week, ty
