Don't get me wrong, this is not a criticism on your stance of no post padding, but I don't quite understand why you believe that you'll have to delete "real" posts down the road because postpadders are eating up space in the database. I personally believe that every post (minus the ones that are censored for various reasons) should always remain accessible (ie-online) for the entire lifetime of TWW. And don't tell me that this cannot be done. Take, for example, Slashdot (http://www.slashdot.org). They have every "issue" and every story and every comment online since the day that they first came online. And believe me, there are a whole lot more users and comments on slashdot than there are on TWW. And they withstand padding on several orders of magnitude greater than TWW (just browse an older Slashdot article at a -1 threshold). Now I'll grant you that Slashdot has advertisements and they have just implemented a "subscriptions" service, and they have corporate funding, but I think that TWW should be able to afford an extra HDD every blue moon if it means preserving the future. And I think TWW users would be willing to pay for that expense. I certainly would.-bigginal[Edited on March 7, 2002 at 9:03 AM. Reason : Slashdot]

if you can come up with one good reason the post padder thread should stay i would like to hear it----it isn't like they were bringing a good discussion back to the top or anything

That, however, is not what my point is about. My point is that I don't think that CrazyJ's reasoning for taking the stance that he does is valid. (this is borrowed from what I hear from The Lounge, btw. If it's incorrect, then sorry about the misunderstanding.)

Well one thing is that the way the software is written, the messageboard pages are cached (ie stored directly in the memory instead of being recreated by the server) until someone makes a topic or post. Having 163 pages of 'pad' stored in the memory of the server is not an efficient use of resources.

They own the site...they pay for it...they can do what they want...case closed!

A lot of the post padding at B-Boys (we call it "freeposting") ending up killing our server a few weeks ago. Don't ever dare say that a "few" unnecessary posts won't hurt anything.
