BIG LO♥EPolygamy Loves CompanySeries Premiere Sunday, March 10th, 2006 - 10:00pm(following the Sopranos)http://www.hbo.com/biglove/[soapbox]Polygamy: more than one husband or wife. (FMM, MFF, MFMF, etc.)Polygyny: more than one wife. (MFF, MFFF, MFFFF, etc.)Polyandry: more than one husband. (FMM, FMMM, FMMMM, etc.)Polygamy does not equal Sin.Polygyny does not equal Patriarchy.Polyandry does not equal Martriarchy.Just because some who practice polygamy are patriarchal religious nut-jobs, doesn't meant that polygamy itself is in any way intrinsically bad, unethical, immoral or wrong. (Ad Hominem) It should be legal for responsible consenting adults to form whatever kind of relationships they desire. Religions can like it or leave it, but government shouldn't have any say in the matter, whatsoever.Traditionalists (Christians, mostly....) are threatened by polygamy, because if future generations practice it successfully and non-oppressively--achieving "social acceptance", the traditionalists will lose even more "moral ground." That's understandable, I mean, if traditionalists have been regarding certain acts as sin for thousands of years, and it turns out that they aren't sin, the traditionalists look pretty stupid for having been barking up the wrong tree for so long...They won't want to admit that they've been wrong....I look forward to the show, as I have heard that it portrays polygamists as ordinary people with ordinary lives, not evil authoritarian monsters going to hell.I really hope it makes it. (It's HBO, so it should....) The Book of Daniel didn't last, mostly because it was network TV. Religious groups have way too much power to censor. If they don't like it, they can change the fucking channel, damn.[/soapbox]

Well, i don't know what religion you're talking about, but I'm pretty sure nothing in the Bible says anything against polygamy. And the old testament's full of it, for whatever that's worth.

ive never claimed to be a biblical scholar, but i did grow up catholic (i no longer practice), and polygamy is definately considered a sin in their eyes.but anyways, i never said that the bible said it was wrong, i said that sin is defined by religion, not the government. clearly some religions view it as a sin.[Edited on March 10, 2006 at 3:20 PM. I'm not saying most Christians don't consider it a sin.I'm saying there's no scriptural basis for it.I am in agreement that some religions consider it a sin.
3/10/2006 3:22:00 PM
ok, thats my point.
3/10/2006 3:23:19 PM

I read an article about this show. It sounds kind of interesting.I'll wait for it to come out on DVD. Since I don't have cable.

I recognize about 2/3 of them. Reviewer on NPR today says it really really pulls you in by the fourth episode or so.
3/11/2006 6:01:04 PM
The show was really good. I'm definitely looking forward to future episodes.Although it wasn't very prominant, the score is being done by Mark Mothersbaugh. Kick ass.
3/13/2006 10:46:15 AM
the first episode was decent...i think as NPR suggests i'll be hooked by the next episode or so.i have SO many questions though about mormons and polygamy now...not knowing much of anything about the two i think i need somewhat of a lesson on their take on religion in order to fully understand it.[Edited on March 13, 2006 at 10:53 AM. The family isn't mormon. It looks like the town they came from was a super conservative mormon offshoot or something.
3/13/2006 10:59:37 AM
ahh...see, i have lots of questions! wikipedia says that the connection of polygamy and mormons is not uncommon, but the ones that left LDS back in 1890 when the leaders of LDS said that God told them polygamy was to be discontinued, are the ones that still practice polygamy. it's all coming clear now...the ones that practice polygamy are
3/13/2006 11:11:22 AM
Yeah. Also keep in mind that mormons are crazy.
3/13/2006 11:26:28 AM
I resent that comment! We arent crazy, we just have a great deal of depth to our theological doctrine.I dont have HBO, but I will be downloading the show because i think it will be pretty funny.Heres my take on how this show came out.... So, you have all these mormon activist groups screaming all the time for more family values on tv and lobbying for better family shows and such, so HBO says... ok... we will shut you up... We will give you more family values than you ever thought we would....And Voila!! Family Values in a polygamist setting. I think its quite the humorous backlash.

Who's the prophet guy the teenage girl is married to?
3/14/2006 1:16:10 PM
He appears to be the leader of the sect/town that Bill Paxton and his first two wives came from. He's Chloe Sevigny's character's father, as well. And he's got a fine-ass 14 year old wife.
3/14/2006 1:23:54 PM
i liked the first showit took me a few minutes to get the relations of the characters

This one time in high school, my history teacher was talking about Joseph Smith having 34 wives. And this girl said "Ew! What does he need 34 different holes for?"And this guy said "It's more like 34 times three."

Then all we'd be left with is the general will, a republic that decides what is criminal and actually detrimental to society. How could we possibly go on?

I thought Big Love was really good. I watched the first and second episodes and I have the third one DVRed (with the Sopranos). The first episode kind of creeped me out but then as you keep watching you get really sucked into the inner workings of polygamy. In the second episode where Bill Paxton's family has the other polygamous family over for dinner, the husband of the guest polygamous family confided to Bill Paxton that he wanted to take in another wife. And he added that his other wives were excited about it! The concept that these women are okay with sharing their husband is so strange to me. I also watched this documentary on A&E about polygamy in Utah and they documented the history of the Kingston family. The Kingston family is one of the largest polygamous families in all of Europe...and the richest (worth 150 mil). It got so bad that the one of the Kingstons married his own daugher, only 16 at the time, to his brother who already had 16 wives! That was one of the most extreme cases of polygamy

I don’t know much about modern Polygamy. The ancient Greeks, while mostly monogamous, believed that in the earlier “myth times” that polygamy was practiced in the more chieftain like hunter-gatherer society. Zeus and Hera are sometimes treated as the primary pair, but with Zeus having several minor wives. Wives quarrelling for ranks can make for interesting stories when they have god like poweres.

HBO's creators of Big Love said that they researched Big Love for over 2 years to try to make it as realistic as possible.

Can someone explain the whole Mormon polygamy belief with respect to the show? I think I'm a little lost... The Mormon Church officially denounced polygamy in the late 1800s, right? And that's when the FLDS started, which is what is practiced on the compound? If Bill and his family broke away from the compound, do they still consider themselves to be part of the FLDS or just regular Mormons (or maybe Mormon fundamentalists)? And what about Bill's business partner? I think I remember him saying he had a different branch of faith than Bill, but yet still practiced polygamy.Maybe I'm seeing things wrong here, but was just hoping someone could clear these things up for me ]

look, nobody cares about bill paxton's slew of mediocre-looking, dull and poorly developed character wives unless they're sucking some hbo dick or can't get over the fact that a weekly drama can in fact contain cursing...
