My Tacoma has been acting up for a few months now.Somtimes, when I attempt to start it, the starter will clack once, and that's all that happens (the engine won't even try to crank over). Usually it only takes about 3 tries before it cranks, but sometimes it takes upwards of 15 tries before it finally cranks, and when it does, it always does starts nice and clean. It does this at least 50% of the time, and it's been going on long enough for me to fix the problem.I'm pretty sure it is the starter motor that's funked up, so I was planning on replacing it, but just wanted to check if anyone knows any other potential causes of these symptoms.

Yep...starter. But it's the solenoid part of it that's fucked up. The contacts inside (namely the one the battery bolts to) have eroded from arcing so that they only make intermittent contact. It's the most documented problem with NipponDenso starters. But it's also cheaply fixed. You can get the contact kit for under 20 dolla.Or you can go ahead and buy the whole starter and get a lifetime guarantee. Your call.
