GoogleEarth-0762that's the name of the file.I was attempting to install the newer version of Google Earth, when it installation fucked up, and I had to exit out of it. well, it left this file on my desktop, and whenever i try to delete it, it says "Cannot delete GoogleEarth0762: It is being used by another person or program.Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."I don't know of any program open that is using that damn file... how can i get rid of it?

3/6/2006 3:43:26 PM
how do i boot up in safe mode?
3/6/2006 3:44:04 PM
hold down F8 as soon as it POSTs.
3/6/2006 3:45:22 PM
Or you can try deleting it from the command prompt, sometimes that will get em.
3/6/2006 3:45:56 PM
ok i'm going to try the safe mode deal
3/6/2006 3:47:41 PM
i vote for a reformat.
3/6/2006 3:49:49 PM
ok i held down F8 the whole time it was booting up, and it never gave me the option to boot in safe mode.
3/6/2006 3:51:54 PM
once the computer starts (before it gets into windows) just keep hitting the f8 key.
3/6/2006 3:53:53 PM
ok... i booted it up in safe mode, and it still won't let me delete it. how do i do the command line thing?
3/6/2006 4:11:17 PM
this is fucking ridiculous. how fucking hard is it to delete a fucking icon?
3/6/2006 4:13:05 PM
maybe you're on candid camera?
3/6/2006 4:14:35 PM
i hope not.]
3/6/2006 4:16:21 PM
my suggestion is still on the table and is guaranteed to work.
3/6/2006 4:20:41 PM
no, i don't want to format my computer just to get rid of one icon.
3/6/2006 4:45:37 PM
go to Start then Run and type "cmd"then type "cd Desktop"then "del GoogleEarth-0762.exe"
3/6/2006 5:06:33 PM
well holy shit.it was that simplethanks a shitload dude. i'll buy you a beer if i ever see you out somewhere... and recognize you... and remember this thread.
3/6/2006 5:08:41 PM
There's also a program you could do this with. It's called Move On Boot.I used it to delete some of the files I couldn't get rid of.
3/6/2006 5:28:39 PM
eh, no sense in installing a program when the command line turns out to be that easy to do.
3/6/2006 5:42:57 PM
rm -rf
3/6/2006 5:50:31 PM
haha no problem man
3/6/2006 7:00:15 PM
^^ That's not nice at all . . . [Edited on March 6, 2006 at 7:01 PM. Reason : .]
3/6/2006 7:00:53 PM
what does
3/6/2006 7:06:10 PM
In windows... nothing
3/6/2006 7:16:39 PM
In linux as uid 0 ... can cause you to look for a new job.Smath ... worst comes to worst in the future, boot off the Windows XP CD and navigate to whatever folder the file needs to be deleted from. This will work 95% of the time. The other 5% requires NTFS for Dos (from bootdisk.com) or something similar.
3/7/2006 8:08:38 AM
killbox
3/7/2006 8:35:55 AM
rm -rf-r = recursive, goes as deep as the dirs/files go where you try and delete-f = force, never asks, just does it no matter what
3/7/2006 10:26:01 AM
rm = Remove (files or folders)
3/7/2006 12:52:44 PM
I <3 command prompt. Windows is always like 'YAR! YOU CAN'T DELETE THIS BECAUSE I SAID SO' then you are like "think again, n00b!"
3/7/2006 1:45:47 PM
^ ugh yeah. this has happened to me numerous times. even worse than what Smath74 is talking about is when the icon is on your desktop but not at the same time. like when you go to delete it, it says the file simply does not exist. im like "wtf mate?!? if it doesnt exist then why the fuk is it on my desktop?"
