Get home if it will save you money.and fyi, this is a pretty low end system, so dont spend a bunch of cash on it. (>$5-600)
3/2/2006 4:33:20 PM
I'll probably add more memory and hard drive space as I go forward, but I was just outgrowing my old box. It's only a Pentium II 400....
3/2/2006 4:41:51 PM
that was a sweet ass system in like '00 holmes
3/2/2006 4:50:46 PM
I never really played games until now that I've graduated and have the time....I only did school work on it.
3/2/2006 4:56:57 PM
Well don't worry.you wont be doing much gaming on this new rig, either. You've got the same specs as my laptop, minus the 2.6ghz proc.[Edited on March 2, 2006 at 4:58 PM. Reason : lol]

lmao you guys are assholesi don't know much about this myself (i just made a thread very similar to this one), but i think it'd help if you said what you wanted to use this computer for. if people knew what you were trying to get out of the pc, and what amount of $$$ you're wanting to put into it, they can point you in the right direction for what parts to get.

I'm going to get a bigger hard drive and more memory later on. I really just needed the bigger case so I could expand further. Plus, the mobo I have supports dual-cores so I can upgrade it later. I just wanted something that will run Heroes 5, Dungeon Seige 2, World of Warcraft, Pirates!, and other games like those....It has 10 bays: 4 5.25" bays, 2 3.5" floppy bays, and 4 3.5" hard drive bays...so hopefully plenty of room for expansion....[Edited on March 2, 2006 at 5:03 PM. the specs you listed won't run WoW. the rest of the games i'm not sure about, but if you got something that ran WoW well, it'd probably run the others as well.

The board has an AGP slot, so I have to get an AGP Graphics card. I have three, and only two of them are recent buys. One is the AIW, and I also have an EVGA Geforce 4000(?) that are both AGP. It has four DDR DIMM slots for upgrade as well. What's the best buy on a graphics card that will fit what I need?Things left to buy:-Graphics Card-DDR DIMM Memory-Socket 775 Pentium 4 Processor-Additional Harddrive (probably 250GB)I'm also open to other suggestions for upgrades.[Edited on March 2, 2006 at 5:11 PM. Okay, if you're using parts from a stockpile or other PCs at home, you're not building a new PC from scratch.I'd reccomend an AMD setup, if you havent bought anything yet.You also haven't given us a budget.[Edited on March 2, 2006 at 5:22 PM. Reason : ]

So are the components that you listed up top things that you have already bought or that you are thinking about buying?
3/2/2006 5:22:05 PM
my current pc has 1 gb ram, pentium 4 2.66 GHz w/ATI RADEON 9800 Pro video card (AGP)WoW generally runs pretty well, but you could definitely do better.
3/2/2006 5:24:01 PM
I would get a p4 930 or 940.
3/2/2006 5:40:13 PM
y would buy a 940 pin? they are 130nm cores and they run hot as shit. 939 is much better alternative and provide better performance. Most 940s are opterons and if ur not running servers then its pretty much useless. If u wanna go intel then the lga 775 dual core is prob a good choice. i'm not much of an intel guyY are u going w/ agp? its dying or dead technology. think PCI-E1gb as been the standard lately and they are moving towards 2gb ddr2 this is def a low end system. I don't know ur application for this rig. def nothing too intensive obviousBEST ADVICE: BUY A DELL. they are fairly cheap the from the components you listed you could prob get a step up from that from Dell for cheaperchange out the keyboard/mouse/speakers and maybe a new monitor[Edited on March 3, 2006 at 10:49 AM. ....maybe you should read. he's got a 775LGA board thus my 940 suggestion would be for a p4 940 (2x 3.4ghz cores with 2mb l2 cache each)
3/3/2006 10:52:52 AM
I already had the AGP mobo.... I also already had two AGP graphics cards.
3/3/2006 10:53:33 AM
i don't get it. your thread says you're building a new PC from scratch, when really you're just upgrading...
3/3/2006 10:54:57 AM
3/3/2006 10:56:53 AM
I started with a new mobo. I got it first.... Now I'm just trying to build around it.
3/3/2006 11:19:45 AM
bad choice.I'd return it and order all the parts at once.
3/3/2006 11:21:29 AM
^ agreed!
3/3/2006 11:28:46 AM
ok. Budget of $600. I want it to be able to run World of Warcraft (because if it can run it, it should run everything else).I already have a new 10-bay ATX case, but I'm open for suggestions on mobo/video card/processor. Thanks for all the help so far!

Awesome advice guys! Thanks!
3/3/2006 12:09:05 PM
or if you dont need the HDD in my setup, go to an SLI board and add another geforce 6600GT.
3/3/2006 12:09:49 PM
^ i wouldn't go w/ 2 6600 cuz u just buy the better card and it would be greater than 2 6600s.sli and crossfire are reserved for the best of the best like 2 7800gtx 512mb or 2 x1900xtx. In lower cards you could just buy the next step up and perform better then the 2 lower cards. SLI and crossfire should not be an upgrade path either for the same reason. just buy the better card
3/3/2006 1:15:57 PM
A pair of 6600GTs will be just as fast, if not faster than an x800. The packages are about the same price.
3/3/2006 1:23:02 PM
tough call, i see no point in sli/crossfire. it'll just be easier to buy the next step, u'll save money on the sli/crossfire board and sli/crossfire psu.

yeah, but he didn't list bf2 earlier when he was listing games
