I'm looking to move to another addiction

WoW 2?
2/28/2006 2:31:18 PM
I just downloaded the 1-month free trial of Everquest 2 on a lark, and now I can't stop playing. The whole "ever-crack" thing apparently wasnt a joke.

With MMOs, unless new servers are opened up you can't really start late. So really your onlyoption is to wait until the next big MMO comes out.If you want to play an old MMO and be hopelessly behind then I would check out:EQ / L2 / DAoCThe next big MMO will likely be Vanguard SoH. Some smaller ones to keep an eye on areTabula Rasa, and The Lord of the Rings Online.
2/28/2006 4:38:33 PM
I'd suggest Eve Online, which is one of the few MMOs that you can start playing now and still have fun.
2/28/2006 5:07:26 PM
yeah I was looking at the two new ones to come out this month RF online and D&D online.RF has an art style I like but doesn't sound that robust.D&D is more in the vein of guildwars, but has some platforming and puzzle elements, despite the fact I loathe the concept of pen and paper rpgs and the like
2/28/2006 5:37:55 PM
RF Online is basically Lineage 2 with an even heavier emphasis on PvP and better models.D&D is amazing but it is basically a 6 man RPG. Their game would be better suited to use a payment plan similar to NWN. I couldn't bring myself to pay a subscription to it.
2/28/2006 5:43:18 PM
considering many videogames draw either the ideas or direct gameplay from pen and paper games you best get over that.
2/28/2006 5:43:34 PM
Second Life is interesting stuff if you arent looking for a fancy engine and smooth gameplay, it is more about socializing and simple games like puzzles and stuff.
2/28/2006 9:44:15 PM
Isn't it porn?

2/28/2006 10:15:52 PM
^ I don't think that's even close to what he was saying, but I'm not really sure why you should get over it. Maybe he means you should be thankful that pen and paper rpg's have inspired most of the more succesful computer rpg's, (mmo and otherwise) in some way or another? Meh.
2/28/2006 10:33:17 PM
yeah I know what he's gettin at and I realize what I said is a pretty big leap, I just think while the math may be underlying its just really a completely different thing but hey everybody has they're own opinions
2/28/2006 10:34:56 PM
Check out eve online.
2/28/2006 10:39:26 PM
Fading Suns Online forever!
2/28/2006 10:42:27 PM
i dont doubt they are different, but they are the same basic principle carried out in a different way. it really just comes down to what you think of pen&paper games and how you play them.

Everquest - Most Content, lowest requirements, largest world, etcEverquest 2 - eh... I don't like a lot of things with it. Solid content, large area, group angled, instances but you can't help people not in your group if a monster is attacking them. Lineage - Get's boring after a while. Lacks a shitload of contentStar Wars - It's changed BIGTIME. Check it out before you get interested. IT fights like an FPS now. The rest are all second class MMO's meaning that there following is nowhere close to the above
2/28/2006 11:48:08 PM
guild wars
2/28/2006 11:49:20 PM
Guild Wars is barely even an MMO.
2/28/2006 11:54:47 PM
^^I've been able to help out non-grouped people. I just dont get xp for it :/Also, theres been a flood of newbs on the servers due to this new 1-month trial. Plenty of people to level up with.
2/28/2006 11:56:33 PM
my history - SW Galaxies - Early adopter, liked it but travel and technical issues were big early onFFXI - I've got a soft spot for it despite its problems, liked the art style and combat though making money was a bitchCity of Heroes - Nice but a little too repetative.WoW - Enjoyed it and it did a lot of things well but just never quite reeled me in like I wanted, community seems full of pain in the asses moreso than galaxies or FFXII pretty much feel like I'm gonna head out this weekend and get either D&D or RF, though leaning D&D[Edited on March 1, 2006 at 12:19 AM. I stress tested D&D. It was fun and all, but the thing I hated the most was the fact that every single fucking room was its own instance. Examples?Going into the tavern?10 second load screen.Going into an armorsmith?10 second load screen.Going into a dungeon?10 second load screen.I posted on their forums about how it was odd that Warcraft only requires TWO major load screens between entire fucking continents, and I don't think I got a response from them about it.
3/1/2006 1:25:51 AM
i dont know one person that liked FFXI, and im bering serious
3/1/2006 1:28:06 AM
There were alot of things i liked about FFXI....but my main gripe with it is the sheer amount of time you have to dedicate to it in order to get anywhere
3/1/2006 1:37:51 AM
^^^ D&D is also able to handle a massive amount of players without crashing or lagging unlike WoW (AQ gate opening, Org, Ironforge, Blackwing Lair, etc, etc)Besides all you need to be doing is running inbetween the tavern and various dungeons. Considering dungeons take awhile to do the short time it takes to transfer instances is hardly an issue.[Edited on March 1, 2006 at 1:38 AM. Reason : ^]
3/1/2006 1:38:14 AM
^^ in other words, it's difficult.Hence my weaksauce comment.
3/1/2006 3:05:34 AM
no its not difficult. its simply built around taking as long as possible to do anything, without the feel of being epicly long to the point of being interesting. the only challenge is not being consumed by shear boredom.
3/1/2006 3:09:04 AM
Clearly you've never played the endgame material. And people say that because they get fixated on leveling, which is only 1/10 of the game.[Edited on March 1, 2006 at 3:16 AM. Reason : .]
3/1/2006 3:13:02 AM
FFXI could be very taxing time wise, but i also am not a fan of WoW's make it super easy to get to the last 15 levels so you can farm the big instances, it just seems like in WoW everybody can be an elite max level player, something like that should be more of an acomplishment
3/1/2006 3:21:31 AM
Exactly. And apparently FFXI is on the other end of the spectrum, so people always complain about how long it takes to do anything.
3/1/2006 3:28:32 AM
play wow
3/1/2006 6:59:00 AM
Dont bother with RF online. I played the beta for less than a week and I was amazed at how shallow and boring the game is. I couldn't believe they were actually releasing this thing withing a month and expecting people to enjoy it. Nice graphics, but just not fun.[Edited on March 1, 2006 at 8:33 AM. Reason : .]
3/1/2006 8:33:35 AM
I think my roommate is about to go get D&D, I'll have to watch him play it to see if it's any good
3/1/2006 9:08:28 AM
I stared my MMO life on FFXI. I played for a long time. It was very hard, but I really liked leveling up. I felt like I had really acomplished something big when I beat a really hard quest/mission or when I leveled up one of my crafting jobs to a new rank. Unfortunately, I had to quit b/c I couldn't dedicate the hours of time it takes to play. Plus SE kept trying to fix the economy, which from what I have read, it is still even more out of control than it used to be.I moved to Guild Wars. Since there is no charge, I still play from time to time. I suck at the PvP, so once I get to lvl 20, there's not much left for me to do. I have friends however that are awesome pvpers and they love the game.I beta-tested WoW. I was hooked, but I never went through and bought it. Seemed fun though.I went in on City of Heroes with my brother recently. The jury is still out on that one for me. I am not particularly hooked though.

Now's a good time to get into EQ2... They just implemented PVP and opened up like 5 PVP servers, all with a healthy population and low level characters. I like how they implemented it, it's strict team PVP...very similar to WoW (good vs evil), and the ruleset is pretty cool. They also revamped alot of the lower level content, and made some good changes...Alot of people are having fun with it now, and I recommend it. Guild Wars is fun to, in that you can do it single player and you don't have to pay a monthly fee, lol.
3/1/2006 10:35:23 AM
Seriously, Eve Online. There's a free 14 day trial. There # of subscribers have doubled in the past year, and it's a 3 year old game. 100,000 subscribers all on one server and no real lag. It rocks.
3/1/2006 11:14:48 AM
The only good vs evil in WoW is PvE
3/1/2006 11:15:51 AM

i wish these free trials didn't involve you having to enter all your information
3/1/2006 1:19:03 PM
check out http://www.shardsofdalaya.com , EqEmu but the zones are renamed and linked at different spots and also set at different levels (ie: EC is a upper 50s zone).. much better content that EQLive now, much like it was during Kunark Velious era.. this server is also all Pre-POP, and the best part, its Free.. very stable server as well.[Edited on March 2, 2006 at 7:03 AM. 3/2/2006 7:03:29 AM
City of Heroes/Villains deserves another mention, and the best part is that you only have to subscribe to one to play both (though you still have to buy both).
3/2/2006 7:43:22 AM
Has anyone heard anything about the pirate mmorpg?
3/2/2006 12:30:09 PM
WoW expansion pack.Start from scratch.CoH/CoV is actually kind of fun too. Or was for like the five minutes I played the beta/demo/whatever it was.The rest of the mmo's I've tried have been way too dry and seriouszomg. Also, as a general rule, if it says SOE on the box, avoid it.
3/2/2006 12:31:14 PM
