2/28/2006 1:09:53 AM
I want to see it
2/28/2006 1:10:35 AM
i dunno, i've been in love with garden state from the first time i saw it, but damn if this movie doesnt look pretty good, even if its a ripoff
2/28/2006 1:18:34 AM
Not "mediocre"[Edited on February 28, 2006 at 1:24 AM. Reason : I just vomited after watching that trailer]
2/28/2006 1:20:19 AM
looks horrible.

2/28/2006 1:31:24 AM
okay, i haven't even seen garden state (one of those movies i've been wanting to see since it came out), but that trailer indeed made me wanna puke.
2/28/2006 2:19:43 AM
dont base whether or not you base garden state based on this trailer haha
2/28/2006 2:44:08 AM
considering this was filmed in January 2004 and Garden State was only at Sundance in January 2004, i kinda doubt it's an intentional rip-off
2/28/2006 7:42:22 AM
it is making fun of garden stateat least i hope so[Edited on February 28, 2006 at 8:20 AM. Reason : ok maybe not, looks shitty then]

-Guy returns home after a long time.-Dude is severely depressed.-He meets some hot chick, bwns her, and becomes less depressed.-Wallpaper imageryGARDEN STATEbut seriously, what really irks me about this film...I never though Steve Buscemi was such a pussy.
2/28/2006 8:48:03 AM
ever see ghost world?
2/28/2006 9:06:15 AM
folks, you DO all know that garden state was just a modernized "the graduate," right? this sort of story is timeless. it doesn't have to be a ripoff, just because it has the same plot. it might be, but it isn't necessarily.it's like calling superman a ripoff of the new testament:-powerful beings send their only son to earth-he tries to help them and has special powers-dies and comes back to lifeomg they ripped off jesus![Edited on February 28, 2006 at 9:17 AM. ^ u win!
2/28/2006 10:01:48 AM
Liv Tyler annoys me, but this still looks better than Garden State. Steve Buscemi/Casey Affleck > Zach Braff
2/28/2006 10:35:00 AM
it has Seymour Cassel, how can it not be good?
2/28/2006 10:46:25 AM
well, its not like they released garden state 10 or 24 months after the graduate
2/28/2006 10:50:10 AM
Affleck < *Braff pwnts him wtf you talking about
2/28/2006 10:50:22 AM
the equation doesn't work, and really doesn't work since we have never seen Buschemi's work behind the camera. Affleck will never be better than Braff though
2/28/2006 10:54:15 AM
2/28/2006 10:59:11 AM
some of us have seen Buscemi's work behind the camera. this isn't his first turn as a director. and although Braff plays the likable dork maybe as well as any actor working today, Affleck has an offbeat quality that I think lends itself to more interesting performances.

well, it is like the Graduate with the whole disaffected youth thing, but "modernized" is the wrong word...[Edited on February 28, 2006 at 5:17 PM. Reason : it's more like a descendant maybe?]
2/28/2006 5:16:42 PM
i can kinda see what he's sayingyou take the Mrs. Robinson character out of the graduate, and you really do have some stark similaritiesi would never have really thought it because i always focus on the "YOU'RE TRYING TO SEDUCE ME" part of the film
2/28/2006 5:28:26 PM
yeah i think the graduate comparison is off just a little bit
2/28/2006 5:37:12 PM
i think it is apt
2/28/2006 5:44:19 PM
but on that note i thought elizabethtown was goodwell i only saw part of it, a little ways into it the sappy love story did its job
2/28/2006 6:11:36 PM
well maybe they are similar because LOTS of movies have similar ideas. both movies were well made
2/28/2006 7:35:38 PM
^^^, ^^^^ The Graduate really isn't about the seduction/ affair...it's about the horror of isloation which we all face as we "grow up"
2/28/2006 8:52:17 PM
^why are you telling me thatthats what i saidyou take the mrs robsinson character outand you basically have garden state
2/28/2006 9:07:37 PM
I disagree so wholeheartedly that I'm having trouble articulating my position.I understand the parallel themes of loneliness and alienation and whatever. Thematically, and somewhat tonally, they are similar, but the arc of the characters and the interpersonal relations are so completely different. Not to mention the fact that, while The Graduate is one of the most beautifully crafted films of all time, Garden State amounts to basically a cute little Zach Braffy movie. Not that there's anything wrong with that.On top of that, I think that while Garden State, which I must stress again that I like, tries very hard to emulate films like The Graduate, it lacks the sense of gravity and beauty I see in earlier and better movies. Garden State is like Zoso.[Edited on February 28, 2006 at 9:19 PM. Reason : asdf]
2/28/2006 9:11:34 PM
i see what youre gettin at and i agree pretty much.both are good films. garden state just happpened to be a lot simpler, but it still got the point and the emotions across.the comparison's will be there but i deifnitely dont agree garden state was any kind of ripoff. thats like saying that star wars is a rip off of lord of the rings or something. er thats a terrible example but you get the point. very similar genres exploring similar ideas and emotions but they are not the same film at all imo.
2/28/2006 10:54:35 PM
actually, star wars was a ripoff of akira kurosawa.
2/28/2006 11:39:21 PM
actually, yojimbo was a ripoff of george lucas
2/28/2006 11:47:26 PM
^^ trust me, i know the relationship there. i was an enormous star wars fan growing up. i was just stating an example, and one that the general public would relate too. couldnt think of 2 good movies/series off the top of my head
