my girlfriends computer keeps shutting down by itself, assuming a virus, and a two new alerts pop up, both are "microsoft hyptertext helper" (not hypertext) and she tries to delete them but they keep coming back each time.... she tries to boot in safe mode and its still shutting her down. I tried to help but have pretty much reached the end of my abilities over the phone... any ideas? thanks

Have you tried 3rd party anti spyware programs? I recommend:Spybot Search and DestroyLavasoft AdawareMicrosoft's Antispyware softwareHijack ThisHave you tried running antivirus software in safemode? Have you tried a secondary antivirus program like "AVG"? You may want to if whatever you use now has been effectively disabled, blocked from updating, or is just not helping.

it came up using spybot but before she can delete it, it shuts off. She tried safe mode, still cuts off, she tried booting using the disk, cut off. She tried a complete system reboot, cut off on her. I dont think she would be able to handle hijack this, but from the way it sounds she doesnt even have time to go download it...

At this point I suggest you take it to Mitsuba Intl (829-0294) and ask for Mr Yang. He helps out students all the time and doesn't charge much for a tech shop. It'll probably cost you around $30-$40 for him to remove the problem.

burn a winPE disk, boot with that, clean all the shit out of her temp dirs, edit her registry so stupid stuff doesn't start on boot or as a service, boot in safe mode, finish the job
