I'm in the market for an ultraportable laptop and I was wondering what models ya'll consider the best. The only real requirements I have is that it run Windows XP and weigh in the 4lb range (or less). I was looking at the Dell 710m and figured there has to be something better. Any suggestions?

I have an older x40 and it has been great. My goal was to purchase a small, lightweight laptop and it has worked out perfectly.

I'd say go for the X41 tablet. Generally can't go wrong with a Thinkpad.[Edited on February 26, 2006 at 10:03 PM. Reason : d]

^ for current pricing on the tablet and regular x41 just email randy_davis@ncsu.edu or bill_blades@ncsu.edu They're the ones who actually talk to the rep. Also, you don't have to nescessarily be an NC State student, just a student, faculty, or staff member at a publicly funded school in NC.[Edited on February 26, 2006 at 10:20 PM. Reason : ]

I have a 700M that I have been very pleased with. I would have gone with an IBM but I wasn't ready to drop that sort of cash.

The X41 is awesome...especially for portability. If there are any downsides it's that it doesn't have any type of optical drive...but then again that is what makes it portable. Besides, it has USB 2.0 ports so an external drive is easily added on when needed.Plus, with the name IBM (Lenovo) you know you are getting a quality laptop that will take a beating. Not to mention the 3-year warranty (it's well worth the money to add the 4th year by the way).

Thinkpad X-series is the way to go for ultraportability.

^ I ordered the docking station as well. You can actually switch out the optical drives if you order more than one. My X41 tablet came with software preloaded to act as a ghost drive so you can load a cd onto your harddrive and have it act as if it is being run from a cd-drive.[Edited on February 27, 2006 at 11:25 AM.
