What is lent? Do you give up vices like new years resolutions, or is it more like a sacrifice but of a material object?
2/23/2006 5:21:00 PM
I assure you that most of the fairweather Lent observers who reply to this thread won't be "giving up" anything truly inconveniencing.CHOCOLATECOCA-COLASMOKINGCUSSINGLOL[Edited on February 23, 2006 at 5:25 PM. Reason : ...]

It's also supposed to train your willpower. If you can discipline yourself to give up something little, it will help you to stick to tougher moral decisions.

I have decided to give up soda. It seems small, but I drink about the equivalent of 16 cans of soda a day(usually Sprite). I've been doing this for years and it's gotten out of control so I want to see if I can live without it and maybe become a lot healther in the end, seeing as drinking that much soda a day is bad for your stomach and others things.[Edited on February 23, 2006 at 9:24 PM. I gave up the Internet last year. Well, I still had to use it at work every now and then but I gave up all personal use. I did allow myself a two hours on Sunday night to read some news and sports sites but no message boards or anything. Considering how much time I spend on the Internet this was a pretty tough one for me.
2/23/2006 10:08:45 PM
I still haven't decided. I really want to make a meaningful sacrifice this year, though.[Edited on February 23, 2006 at 10:25 PM. Reason : add]

^ Cause of Jesus, I suspect.

have done soda before, worked out fine, never cheated... gave up full powered soda a few years back and haven't had one since. Gave up cussing, that was probably the hardest one ever for me.I'm thinking after the 4 day bender I just went on in upstate NY that alcohol would be in line, but then st. patty's day falls in lent and the Bristol races... geeze that's prolly not a good idea. But after all it's not supposed to be easy, so yup... alcohol is gone starting next wednesday
2/23/2006 11:32:31 PM
Just to note, you don't have to be Catholic to take part in the penitence... I'm not Catholic.

Anyone gonna do what Josh Hartnett did in the hit comedy "40 Days and 40 Nights" (2002) ?
2/23/2006 11:47:03 PM
I could give up masturbation....NAH. I could give up junk food a lot easier, and I eat way too much of it.I had two packs of Reese's white chocolate peanut butter cups tonite. Damn, they're good.

When I was a Methodist my church had an Ash Wednesday service and members would give up stuff for Lent. Now that I have almost converted (1st communion and confirmation on Easter Vigil) it really isn't any different for me. Oh yeah, I might give up watching State basketball. It'll eliminate my cussing almost entirely.

catholicism
2/24/2006 12:09:32 AM
I'm giving up all sweets/deserts. I do the same thing every year and I've never made it so far, I always at least break Lent on Sunday. But this year I'm going to make it. I never realize how addicted I am to deserts until I stop eating them.
2/24/2006 12:59:43 AM
This year I'll be fasting between sunrise and sundown. This is my first "official" Lent since becoming catholic and I'll be having my first eucharist in March A few years ago I gave up TWW, then the next year I did soda, and last year I gave up meat.
2/24/2006 6:19:08 AM
I am giving up my Catholic religion for Lent.Just kidding...Maybe I will give up Cookout...that would help my wallet too.[Edited on February 24, 2006 at 7:11 AM. Reason : a]

Meat.TWW would be a good idea, too.Did this last year. It's hard because it's so tempting and difficult to find veggie stuff when going out with people.[Edited on February 24, 2006 at 7:24 AM. Reason : I wonder if fish counts...]
2/24/2006 7:22:02 AM
^ Argh...I could never give up meat. I only eat chicken breast, egg whites, and fish when it comes to meat though.
2/24/2006 7:56:02 AM
I know its probably already known, but you really aren't supposed to give up things you shouldn't be doing anyway. Like porn, or sex with children, or something like that.I'll keep my vices this time around.I think I'm giving up soda again. I gave up meat once and it nearly killed me. Soda is manageable.
2/24/2006 11:58:11 AM

Catholic fasting, to my understanding, has never been no eating between sunup and sundown. That's ramadon(sp.) Catholic fasting, I've heard, is that you're allowed three meals a day and the largest has to be more than the sum of the sum of the smaller two. It's a lot harder than it sounds--I've tried it before. That may also be because I have a small stomach and I'm used to snacking throughout the day.
2/24/2006 1:54:25 PM
catholic fasting is one normal meal and 2 snacks. i dont even eat that much in a normal day.and youre supposed to give up something that is sort of an indulgence. a la candy n cursing[Edited on February 24, 2006 at 2:01 PM. Reason : ff]
