In this thread, list albums that you are fascinated by, have a desire to listen, and would like feedback from other people that might have heard it

I'll start

One of my favorite albums of all time is In the Aeroplane over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel

that album, is a fucking masterpiece

today, I picked up On Avery Island, while it is no Aeroplane, I did enjoy it thoroughly listening to it while having the State/UNC game on mute

now, I am considering purchasing Live at Jittery Joe's, an album by Jeff Mangum, the lead in Neutral Milk Hotel

sounds awesome huh? Anyone listened to it, or can anyone tell me about Elephant6?

i am also a huge fan of In the Aeroplan over the Sea and it sounds as if i need to pick up On Avery Island

i kind of want to hear what all this hype about the arctic monkeys is and i really need to give a listen to belle and sebastians new one

It's a collective. A bunch of bands are/were part of it, either directly or tangentially. Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, Beulah, The Apples in Stereo, Elf Power, Of Montreal, etc.

The Elephant 6 logo is on the back of their recordings, even though they're not a label.

I had a period of about a year in which I basically lived and breathed Elephant 6.


And the Arctic Money's ain't shit, by the way. They sound like a hundred other bands and they have a stupid name on top of everything. OMG "EDGY" ROCK ABOUT THE COMMON MAN'S LIFE IN BRITAIN. HOW DROLL.

And I thought Cif's comment was hilarious too, NME is lacking alot of things, but enthusiasm certainly isnt one of them

The list of bands declared by the NME to be the greatest in the world largely coincides with the list of douchebags in the world I would most like to punch.


I was a HUGE fan of The Olivia Tremor Control. They basically have two albums, Music From the Unrealized Film Script: Dusk at Cubist Castle and Black Foliage: Animation Music. I would highly recommend both of these albums. They also have a singles collection, and there's an experimental instrumental album they recorded under the band name Black Swan Network. This is probably harder to find. The albums are back in print, though, and easy to find.

OTC broke up in 1999, and most of them (Will Hart, Jeff Mangum, John Hernandez, Phil Erchick, some other guys) formed Circulatory System. They have one self titled album. It's good. It definitely reflects Will Hart's creative input into The OTC. Bill Dos, the other primary creative force, went on to form The Sunshine Fix. It's much more accessible and poppy, but not nearly as good. They have an EP and an album, Age of the Sun, that I would recommend. I would in no way recommend even a cursory listen to their second album. I definitely WOULD say to catch any of these guys live in any form possible. They will rock your face off.

The other big heavy hitter was Neutral Milk Hotel, which you have already mentioned. I met Jeff Mangum once. He was a weeeeeeeeeeird guy. But very nice. Get Live at Jittery Joe's.

Other notables are Of Montreal, who were never big in the E6 days but of course are very popular now. The Apples in Stereo, fun poppy rock. Major Organ and the Adding Machine, good, weird stuff. Beulah, they have a couple good songs. Elf Power is good. Dressy Bessy is all right if you like girly shit which, I have to say, I do. There's a handful of other bands, too, but I either don't know much about them or wouldn't recommend them.

^ Olivia Tremor Control is soooo good. I love driving around on a sunny day blasting "Hideaway." Circulatory System is also great. Everyday I regret not being able to go to their concert last year in Durham. I figure it was probably a once in a lifetime concert.

I've been considering buying the new Acid Casuals album on vinyl. Has anyone else heard of them before? I like what I've heard so far.

They'd played at Go! twice before that. Both shows were excellent.
