Can anyone give me some insight into the function of the lac operon in controlling expression of a recombinant protein? I understand how the operon works but don't know how it relates to controlling expression.

If the operon is on, (because lactose is present in high enough concentrations), the protein is produced. If the protein (actually multiple proteins) are mutated, they wont convert lactose into glucose. This is assuming the recombinant protein is produced by the lac operon in the first place. If not, fuck if I know.
